we learn that there are 3 types of people who repent and reform themselves.
Allah swt says that He accepts the repentance of the servant who commits an error (sin) in ignorance and then repents (seeks His forgiveness).
as Allah swt says, "the repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance (or carelessness) and then repent soon after. it is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever knowing and wise." (Qur'an 4:17)
repentance was mentioned in the previous verse.
in the next 2 verses are conditions under which repentance is or is not accepted.
the 2nd type are those who keep doing the sins until their time of death comes.
they say, "we repent."
about such people, Allah swt says, "but repentance is not accepted of those who continue to do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'indeed, i have repented now.'" (Qur'an 4:18)
the 3rd type is those who die w/o repentance.
Allah says no matter what promises they make on the Day of Judgement to free themselves from the punishment, it will not be accepted.
"indeed, Allah does not forgive associating others with him in worship, but forgives anything else of whoever He wills. and whoever associates others with Allah has indeed committed a grave sin." (Qur'an 4:48)
