Chapter 1 (Present day)
Naomi
Look, I didn't want to have powers.
If you're reading this because you think you have powers, my advice is: Close this book right this second! Believe whatever lies you were told about who you are, live a normal life.
Having powers is dangerous. It's scary. Most of the time it puts you in danger. If you're lucky enough you die before any chaos happens. Though it's not guaranteed your death is painless.
If you're a normal kid reading this because it's fiction, great. Read on. I envy you for being able to read this and take pleasure in it. Believe it never happened.
But if you see yourself in these pages- if you feel something waking and stirring inside- stop reading. Immediately. You might be one of us and once you know that, it's only a matter of time before they sense it too, then you'll have to choose.
Don't say I didn't warn you.
My name is Naomi Foster.
I'm, 17 years old.
My life was always chaotic. Before the powers gimmick, I was a normal but...interesting kid.
Am I interesting?
You could say that, but the better word is troubled.
I could start at any point in my short, miserable life to prove it, but things really started going downhill last July. I was on a normal mission. Enter the lab, get the info, leave. Undetected.
Sounds like fun doesn't it?
No, it isn't. It's pretty boring, risky too. You see I attend the Heroic Education for the Resilient Organization, more commonly known as H.E.R.O Prep. A school for the pure meta-humans destined for good.
A meta-human has powers, those who have the will for righteous acts and kindness running through them attend H.E.R.O Prep. Not all go on these boring info trips.
Only I do. Well me and my friends. My best friends were the only people I could trust and talk to without being sympathized or ridiculed. I've known them since joining the school.
Adam and Juniper were the ones with me on this mission. They were both sweet and quiet. Not really dangerous trip material, right?
Wrong... you should see them fight.
Speaking of which, the mission. We were on the roof of the building opposite the lab.
The lab was illuminated by the soft glowing, orange spotlights. Tree's decorated the perimeter as though they were sentries guarding the secrets tucked inside the building. Smooth, pure white asphalt coated the front of the building with the name written in bold letters. The lab itself was located on the shores of Tundal. Weird. A laboratory located on a beach? This particular lab was for the metahumans. Naturally, we had to hide it from normal humans and throwing it onto a beach was the best option.
Obviously.
"Ok, the alarms and cameras are disabled," Adam announced nodding at us to get going.
I glanced at Juniper, we nodded before she went down one way and I went down the opposite path. Another thing I should add is that Adam is an overwatch, meaning he doesn't do field missions but rather operates from his tech and helps us through comms.
"Ok, you can come." Juniper's soft voice whispered in my ear. I used my programmer to slip into the system and decode the locked doors.
Creeping through the dark I found Juniper stationed in front of slumbering guards. "What'd you use this time?" I asked her as we slunk along the dark path.
