Chapter Five:
Too fastNaire Carter
New York City, New YorkNaire rubbed Ebony's small back as she tried to calm her back to sleep. She'd been crying for a while and Naire was slowly becoming frustrated because she didn't know what to do. She'd tried everything, from feeding her, to changing her diaper and even burping her.
Worst of all, Naire had school in a few hours. It was currently 4am and she had her first lecture at 8am. Helplessness burned inside of her as her daughter wailed and waited, until Ebony eventually cried herself back to sleep.
Placing her in her crib, Naire turned on the baby cam before walking out of the room to shower. As hot water ran down her toned body, Naire sighed and rubbed her face. This whole thing was going to be hard, she'd obviously expected raising a child completely alone was hard but without Mrs Kingston, it was a struggle.
Ebony was far from being somewhat independent; after all, she had only been born a year ago. Naire knew that staying in South New York meant that she had more people helping her take care of Ebony but it also meant she had no relationship with her child.
When Ebony was born, people told Naire that she'd have to pick between law and her child, Naire didn't want to pick either. She was determined to build a life for herself while simulatenously raising Ebony in a healthy manner. It was a struggle now but deep down, Naire knew it would pay off.
All they had was each other and that was all they needed.
After showering, Naire dried herself and got dressed. Pulling on black tracksuits and some Jordan 1s. She pulled on a cap and walked over to the kitchen to make Ebony's food for the whole day. Since she didn't make breast milk, Ebony had never had it, but Naire ensured that her daughter didn't miss out on anything.
She packed up all the bottles, diapers and extra clothes in Ebony's baby bag. Naire checked her phone to see that it was 6am, her eyes weren't heavy yet but she knew that the lack of sleep would catch up with her eventually.
After finishing up, Naire made herself a cup of black coffee and chugged it down before grabbing her phone and checking when her assignments were due. She was grateful that they was all due in a few weeks time. Her main focus could be on Ebony and her job.
Naire set an alarm for an hour later before she grabbed the baby cam and walked towards the balcony. She lit her blunt and played, 'Dreams, Fairytales, Fantasies' by ASAP Ferg, Brent Faiyaz and Salaam Remi.
As Naire watched the sunrise, she simply enjoyed her blunt and reminisced on the days that had led her here. Many people felt pity for her: a single mother who was also an orphan. The mother of her child had ran off and left her to raise Ebony all alone.
