Chapter Fourty-Seven:
All my LifeNaire Carter
New York City, New York"I can't even sleep now." Naire whispered on the phone, she was standing at the balcony, allowing the cool air to kiss her skin.
"Bro, this shit keeps me awake at night. There's no guarantee." She continued, she'd left her locs untied so they were just covering her face as she let out a deep exhale.
Her heart was racing as she talked to Troy, Sakina was nearing her 9th month and things had been smooth. The baby was healthy, the couple hadn't participated in a gender reveal party because they'd wanted to find out the gender of the baby at birth. Additionally, they'd signed the lease to a penthouse, which they'd be moving into in a week. Sakina had finally let her guard down and picked a place which made her happy.
Hearing slightly heavy footsteps, Naire quickly hung up the phone and slipped it on the table that they kept on the balcony. She glanced back to see Sakina wobbling towards her in the dark, she reached her arms out and Naire grabbed them, gently guiding her to the chair. Groaning as she sat down, Sakina eyed Naire before looking at the phone.
"Who was you talking to?" She asked, typing on her phone as she ordered some sushi at her favourite place. Although it was 3am, the restaurant was open 24/7.
"Troy." Naire replied, leaning on the railings, not even looking at Sakina as her hands shook. The anxiety had been getting to her lately, she couldn't even hide the physical signs anymore.
"Why you hang up the phone so quick?" Sakina said, her voice was so low that you couldn't even consider it a whisper.
"You know what? That ain't my business." Sakina sighed, she put her phone down and rubbed her eyes. "You'on gotta tell me shit."
"Thanks, baby." Naire turned and walked over to kiss her cheek before reaching her hand over to rub her belly through the very large t-shirt Sakina was wearing. She glanced down at her belly, feeling her heart warm up as she realised just how important Sakina and this baby was to her.
For the longest time it had always been just Naire and Ebony, heck, she thought it'd be like that for many years. Never in her life did Naire expect to meet her soulmate so young, she felt as if she'd saved a war hero in her past life for her to be blessed in such a way. Sakina's love felt like a blanket that protected her and she felt cozy surrounded by. Her mind calmed down when she was with her, everything slower down and all that mattered was—her.
Naire's whole being had been consumed by Sakina, by her smile, her energy and her unconditional love. Both women had their own problems but this just made this love even more real, despite the trials and tribulations they'd faced before and the ones they were due to afce later on, their love would be enough to prevail through. Having been alone for her whole life, Naire adjusted to being around someone constantly so quickly that it made her question how she could ever be alone again. The very air she breathed was Sakina, her very reason to get up was Sakina, this love consumed her.
In a world that didn't love their skin tone, their gender, their sexuality, it sure did seem rosy to Naire whenever she thought of facing it with Sakina holding her hand. The love they shared was so true. She'd never thought she'd need someone the way she does. They were truly meant to be, this was the one thing she was sure of. The one thing she'd ever know. Everything between them was felt by her very nerves, she'd never felt so exposed.
"I love you so much." Naire whispered, kneeling down and wrapping her arms around Sakina, who simply hugged her back as much as she could with her belly.
"I love you too." She whispered back, rubbing Naire's back.
"I just wanted to say thank you for coming into my life. Into Ebony's life. Sakina, you're everything to me. You're my peace for real, my sanctuary." She said, feeling tears well up in her eyes. Naire didn't understand why she felt so emotional but everything was becoming so real.
Their one year and a half anniversary was fast approaching, so was the birth.
"I wanted to say this in a better time but I can't find any other time to do it. I been sitting on this ring for a week and I couldn't think of a better place than in our little nest. Where everything began, where our love blossomed." Naire pulled away and knelt down, pulling out a ring box from her pocket.
"Don't cry, na. I ain't asking you to marry me. It's a promise ring that I'll always be here with you and that I will marry you. I love you, Sakina. It feels unreal." Naire smiled, tears slowly trickling down her face as Sakina began to sob.
She watched as Sakina put out her shaky left hand and she slipped the diamond ring onto her finger before pressing their lips together—tasting the saltiness of both of their tears as they sealed this moment.

"I've applied to go to University." Nia revealed to Sakina and Zaniya, the girls had met up in a restaurant in the evening because she'd said she had big news.
"Oh my God, congratulations girl." Zaniya said with a wide grin, "What are you going to study?"
"I want to be a social worker" Nia revealed, she glanced down at her food, feeling slightly emotional.
"I want to help children like Julie and Salvador." She said breathlessly, "I know I'm only one person but even if I can make one child's life better, I slowly start to make a difference and prevent Salvador's mistakes from repeating." She finished off, watching as the two girls looked at her with somber expressions.
"I'm proud of you, Nia." Sakina said, tears welling up in her own eyes, "Helping one person might not change the world, but it could change the world for that one person."
"Corny ass." Nia laughed, she smacked Sakina slightly, who just rolled her eyes.
"The quote is right, even though it's a lil corny." Zaniya smiled, she only wanted to see her two friends be happy. That was all that mattered.
"Imma still take it and listen. I just wanna make an impact and do as much good as I can." Nia finished off, her eyes trailed to Sakina's ring before the girls squealed and excitedly began talking about it.
"You really found the love you wanted, huh?" Nia asked her friends as she admired the ring.
"I really did." Sakina sighed. She'd found the love of her dreams.
Nothing else mattered but the future.
The end.
