Momma sits on the couch, holding Zaylee and shaking her head as I fill her in on the last week of my life. I don't know what part of the story makes her shake her head the hardest but when she finds out Riah got beat up because of me, she's almost as livid as I was when my windows got busted.

"I don't blame the girl for throwing a brick in your window, Sapphire!" She lowers her voice and stares down at Zaylee's sleeping body. "I don't know what to say at this point."

I rub the back of my neck and then put my locs in a quick ponytail to get them off my bare shoulders.

"I didn't mean for none of that to happen, momma." I say, tryna reason with the scowl on her face.

Kasey joins us in the living room with two cups of kool-aid. After handing me one, she takes a seat next to me and prepares for momma's verbal abuse.

Except it doesn't come and that right there got me shook.

"You ain't gon' get mad at her too?"

"Why would I do that? She didn't put herself in this situation, you did. I'm upset because I told you a long time ago to leave that girl alone."

I didn't want to tell momma nothing I had going on. But when I didn't show up to help with her deliveries this morning, she called and called until I finally answered. I didn't have to say much. Momma knew something was wrong the minute I started talking.

She was knocking on the door not even an hour after our call ended.

"So what are you going to do now?" Momma asks and runs a finger across Zaylee's cheek.

Zaylee smiles in her sleep and makes my heart swoon.

"Spent two hours on the phone with my insurance. I have to come out of pocket for the tires but they're gonna replace my windshield. And I went to Lowes earlier to get some wood to cover this window til it gets replaced." I said and let out a frustrated breath of air.

"Have you been in contact with her?"

I scrunch my nose up and frown.

"No. I haven't talked to her or nothin'."

"Well, I'm sorry this is happening but maybe you'll learn your lesson now."

"What lesson is that, momma? Leave the straight girls alone? Yeah, noted." I stand up and walk upstairs to cool off.

I know I can't be mad at momma but that doesn't mean I'm not annoyed.

I throw myself backwards on the bed and let out a groan. Today's been a day and it's barely 1pm. I'm tired, agitated and honestly, I just want momma to leave and go on about her business.

After a few minutes of silence, I roll over and pull the covers over my head.

A nap sounds good right about now.

It's after 5pm when I wake up and find Kasey downstairs. She's in the kitchen cooking and talking on the phone, probably with Mercedes. So I don't bother her.

I tip toe over to Zaylee's bassinet and peer inside. Big gray eyes look up at me as soon as I lay my eyes on her. I smile automatically and pick her up quickly.

"Wassup, mama?" I kiss her cheeks as I walk over to the couch.

"You look so cute." I compliment the pink and purple unicorn onesie she's wearing with another kiss on her cheeks.

I change the baby's diaper, get her settled in my arms and then I start flipping through channels even though I don't really care to watch anything on TV.

Riah comes to mind.

I feel bad for playing her and momma's words earlier made me feel worse. But I know nothing good is gon' come out of reaching out to her at this point.

I fucked her over more than once. She ain't gonna want to hear shit I got to say. Not that I have much to say anyways.

"I hope you like baked spaghetti." Kasey's voice causes Zaylee to stir and squirm.

My stomach growls.

"Aww man, she was about to go to sleep without a bottle." I fake whine and smile when Kasey takes a seat next to me.

Zaylee starts to whimper for Kasey to take her, which she does happily.

"Nah, she just wanted mommy." She places a soft kiss on top of Zaylee's head and just like I knew she would, the baby stops crying instantly.

"I like this." I say as I lean back to get a better view of Kasey and Zaylee.

She looks like an angel holding our baby. Her hair is in a high bun and her face is free of makeup and damn, I can't wait to call her mine.

"Me too. Which is why I really don't want to be involved with no drama, Sapphire." She sighs and looks away from me. That makes my stomach turn.

"It ain't gon' be no more drama. This shit with Riah is dead. You got me."

"Nah, but I wish I did though." Her eyes fall in her lap where she strokes Zaylee's cheek.

My chest squeezes tightly.

"Whatchu mean?"

"You said it yourself, you're never gonna be able to commit to one woman. So, nah. I don't really gotchu like that. Maybe for now, yeah..."

I sit there quietly for a few very long seconds. I'm unsure of what to say next because she's right. I did say that.

But everything is different now.

I think Kasey could get me to drop my old ways. But I don't think she wants to put her heart on the line just to find out.

"Anyways, I'm gonna take a shower. The food should be done when I get out." Kasey stands and offers a tiny smile.

I watch her disappear upstairs and then silence fills the living room.

Damn.

As much as she gave me to think about, I push those thoughts to the side and reach for my phone on the coffee table as it vibrates.
