i hold my hand out to the sunlight
letting it rest upon my palm
like a clear river
of untouched rain
brett woke up feeling better than usual the next morning. tender sunshine greeted him as he sat up and stretched, rubbing his eyes and opening them.he remembered where he was when he noticed his unfamiliar surroundings. turning red from the memories of last night, brett crawled out of the bed. a set of clothes was settled at the edge of the bed with a small piece of paper resting on it.
you can change into these. -e
brett gladly changed. the clothes were a bit too large for him, and the sleeves of eddy's shirt draped over his fingers when he dropped his arms to his sides, but he didn't really care. he carefully made the bed and put on his hearing aids before stepping outside. it took him a bit before he found eddy in the kitchen. brett lit up at the sight of him.
"oh, hey," eddy greeted brett. "i'm making breakfast, you can sit at the table."
brett accepted the offer and sat down, focusing on the odd sizzling noise coming from the kitchen. brett knew what that sound was; he was always so excited to hear it when his mom was cooking, knowing that it was a hot pot or something else he loved. but that was before his hearing loss. these days, only the smell stimulated him.
minutes later, eddy set a bowl of rice in front of brett and sat down across from him. they ate in an awkward silence. brett finished eating, stood up to wash his bowl, and slipped into the dishwasher, stepping behind the counter so eddy could wash his.
"could we do something besides practice today? i want to get to know you better," brett requested when eddy finished.
"yeah, we could take a walk in the park," eddy suggested, drying his hands. "here." eddy picked up a jacket off that was draped over the back of a chair and handed it to brett. "it'll be cold."
brett gladly slid the jacket on and watched eddy unlock the door, standing aside and inviting brett outside. brett walked out, patiently allowing eddy to close the door and lead the way. he noticed how eddy walked so close to him that their arms were brushing, but brett didn't mind at all. eddy didn't need to talk at all to express his affection. hat was something he admired about him; while everyone wasted their words, eddy listened and spoke without having to open his mouth.
brett reached over gently and took eddy's hand.
before, conversation came so easily to them. they could tell the other anything without worry, laugh even if their jokes were cringe, and compliment each other, but now, they could only walk in silence and shudder as they felt their fingers wrap around their hands. brett walked closer to eddy, relishing his warmth. he sighed contentedly. a few birds sang, their symphonies slightly hidden underneath the breeze and rustling leaves, and although the cold was quite harsh, eddy's warm, soft skin kept brett comfortable.
"it's getting pretty cold, we should go inside," eddy suggested.
"mm," brett hummed, although he wasn't cold at all. he was actually sweating a bit.
eddy led the way to the same coffee shop they had met. when they entered, eddy sadly let go of brett's hand. even though he still wanted to hold it, brett understood eddy's decision. they sat in silence (thankfully). the quiet always allowed brett to think and feel and ponder over absolutely anything without bothering him.
the wind outside calmed down to make way for some not-so-gentle rain, which filled brett's ears annoyingly and added onto the heavy white noise of the rest of the sounds of the café.
"it doesn't look like it's going to stop raining anytime soon," eddy remarked. despite all the noise, brett could hear eddy's voice clearly.
brett stood up and peered out the window, placing his hand on the cold glass. "well, we can't be in here forever," brett said. he walked over to the door and opened it. "yolo?" eddy smiled and followed him. he stepped out into the rain and held out his hand towards brett.
brett took off his sharing aids, stuffed them inside his pocket, and took eddy's hand, ambling out into the gentle drizzle, allowing it to land on his hair, the feel of eddy's hand in his keeping him warm. the soft rain landed onto his hair and slowly began drenching him.
without warning, brett pulled eddy and ran over to the park, unheard laughter drawing bliss on both of their faces. he led eddy down a path that was lined with flowers, taking both of his hands in his. brett slipped and eddy quickly grabbed him around the waist and helped him up, both of them not able to stop laughing as the rain slowed down and let the light of the arrogant sun peek through the clouds. they both were soaked and probably were going to get a cold, but they didn't care. brett didn't have as much fun with anyone else before.
"you're a mess," brett said (even though he wasn't wearing his hearing aids), eyeing eddy's disheveled hair that was plastered to his forehead from the rain.
eddy laughed again. "so are you," he responded playfully. "we should get back to my house and clean up."
"yeah," brett agreed. eddy let go of brett and reached for his hand again.
they walked, hand in hand, back to eddy's house. none of them said a thing, but eddy's eyes said everything. brett squeezed eddy's hand.
once at eddy's place, he unlocked the door and strode inside, treading water, and flicked on the lights. he helped brett out of his jacket and gave him a dry set of clothes to wear. brett changed promptly. eddy grabbed a towel and carefully dried brett's hair.
"your glasses," brett observed. he pulled them off eddy's face and dried them with the bottom of his shirt (more like eddy's shirt) and placed them back on his nose.
eddy returned the gesture and dried brett's glasses, but before he could put them back on, brett pulled eddy into a tight embrace. eddy hesitated slightly before returning the hug.
it was quite a while before brett finally let go. eddy's warmth still lingered around him, sending butterflies askew in his stomach. the silence that followed seemed to scream this time, throwing a tangle of emotions at him and begging him to break it.
brett backed away. "i'll actually go now," he said, a small hint of sadness escaping into his voice. eddy reached forward and said something, but brett wasn't able to catch it. "i'm sorry—i—i'll see you soon. today was amazing. thank you." he wanted to say that eddy was amazing, but he couldn't get himself to. he placed his hand on the doorknob and opened it hastily, walked outside, turned to give eddy a small wave before practically running back to his apartment, his heartbeat thumping openly as if it were a metronome's attempt to help.
