THE LAST BITE

The Prince

"Hello," a voice, a new voice called making Eve nervous and fearful, she had never felt this before.

"Who you are? I haven't seen you in the garden before." Adam said stepping forward from behind Eve. Eve turned and saw a serpent and his beady red eyes glaring at them. Then as if it was a hallucination, his eyes turned blue and hypnotizing. Eve's fear disappeared and she found herself intrigued by the creature.

"My name is Sat- you know, my name is really not important." The serpent waved his tail at them. "But, I know you and I want what's best for you." His voice was smooth, each word sounded of a beautiful song and he drew Eve towards him.

"You want what's best for us?" Adam asked confused, curling his toes into the lush green grass. Adam stayed in front of Eve, still hesitant of the snake. Eve remained silent, her eyes fixated on his beautiful colors and the way he moved up and around the tree so effortlessly.

"I want you to be powerful, like God." The strong, fearless creature slipped down the tree and stood on his tail to face them. "He is holding you back from your full potential." His voice was as smooth as a bunny rabbits fur and his tone was honest and sincere. "He doesn't want you to be all knowing like him. I can make you see." Eve wanted to believe him.

"See what?" Eve questioned and moved closer to the serpent.

"See what you have been missing, of course." The serpent ignored Adam and guided Eve towards himself. "It's a big, beautiful world and you are only allowed to see this much." He spun in a circle, making the garden suddenly seem so small. "He is keeping you here because he knows that you would leave if you knew more than him." As Eve searched the garden she found herself wanting more. More than these trees, more than the animals, more of something, but she wasn't sure exactly of what. But, the thought only lasted a moment, her sanity capturing her.

"We wouldn't leave," Eve countered almost immediately. "We love God and he loves us, he created us." Eve's small lips turned up into a smile. The serpent appeared to be telling the truth, why would he not, but something didn't feel right therefore Eve politely pulled away from the serpent. "We would never want to leave God, that would hurt Him." The word hurt stuck in her throat a moment longer. Hurt, Eve thought again trying to place the word, what is hurt? Adam's gaze dropped to Eve, confusion plastered his face. Hurt, he mouthed to her, but Eve just shrugged her shoulders and shook her head. With the dismissal of that one word Eve knew that the serpent knew something more than them. His eyes seemed to grow as the words escaped Eve. She wanted to ask what hurt meant, but couldn't find the courage to speak. They knew the serpent was different, they knew he was special, but did they want to be special like him?

The serpent slithered closer, "darling," he focused in on Eve once more, "but, don't you want more? More animals, more adventures, more fruit?" He slithered through the trees and Eve and Adam followed unable to keep their feet planted to the ground. "Like this one." He slithered up the truck and stayed eye level with them. "This one is the most delicious," every 'S' he spoke was like a soothing, rippling stream. "This one will make you just as powerful as God." Eve couldn't look away from the suddenly delicious fruit, while Adam couldn't take his worried eyes off of Eve. "This one will change everything."

"God said not to eat from that one." Eve said softly.

"That's only because he doesn't want you to be like him, remember?" The serpents soothing tone made Eve believe him, think the serpent right. "He wants to keep you in the dark, I want to bring you into the light." Eve's brain churned and questions popped into her mind, for God and the serpent. Adam however did not waver in his faith, he didn't believe the snake, at least he didn't want to believe him.
