Jamie is taken to a trip to the family estate that was turned into a mountain resort. While it is temporarily closed, her cousin and his friends spend a few days to enjoy a mountain scenery.
Jamie is diagnosed with AIWS, a rare neurological disorder characterized by distortions of visual perception, the body image, and the experience of time. She see things smaller than they are, feels her body alter in size or experience any of the syndrome's numerous other symptoms.
Lately, she has been hallucinating and seeing deers often.
After seeing Cole's dog eat a deer corpse and attacking her, she is reluctant to be partaking in this trip, but keeps quiet about it.
She meets Thomas, an odd boy in the woods who informs her that the deers scream in the area, and are mostly confused for someone needing help.
Slowly, she starts seeing a tall figure, and deals with small, yet creepy pranks that she convinces herself are only are hallucinations.
The terrifying reveal is that she couldn't tell which is real or a hallucination. And most of them were real.
After Ollie's uncharacteristic outburst, Jamie reveal to Lyan about a family member that once died in the estate.
{ABOUT ELIZABETH BEILLE:
Elizabeth lives with her family, along with close relatives in the estate. She was engaged to a French man, whom she loved dearly. A Deer Demon falls in love with Elizabeth, and plans to drag her to his hellish woods. Thomas reveals to Jamie that Elizabeth was raped by her cousin and is pregnant with his child. Angered that she was engaged, but also bearing another man's child, The Deer Demon attacks Elizabeth one night while she was all alone in the estate. The woman fought off the attacks and fought back, but was slowly losing hope and strength to carry on. In her last moments, she writes a letter to her fiancè, apologizing to him that she couldn't carry on with the fight. After writing the letter, Elizabeth fights off the demon again with a kitchen knife, before getting ahold of a rope. After running away from him, with the remaining time she has left, hangs herself on the estate's stair's newel post. Enraged by this event, the Demon bites off the dead Elizabeth's ring finger, mocking her till death that she "belonged" to him.}
*Jamie is the spitting image of Elizabeth, and the Demon mistook her for Elizabeth for a moment. After confirming that she isn't Elizabeth's incarnate, he switches his targets and promises and places them above Jamie's head. If he couldn't take Elizabeth, he would take Jamie instead.
*The portrait of Elizabeth bleeding and turning into Jamie instead is an announcement by the Demon that he has moved on from Elizabeth and plans to take Jamie now instead.
When Thomas is revealed to be the Deer Demon, he reveals that history is only repeating itself. Mentioning that Jamie would be taking Elizabeth's place, and the terrible events with her and her cousin would happen all over again. Revealing that Cole and Lyan had horrible intentions with Jamie. The only part of history that didn't repeat is Elizabeth's fate. He won in the end this time.
*Although Thomas said that Jamie wrote to him and prayed to him when she was younger, it wasn't mentioned in the book at all and was probably just a ruse to mess with her again.
*In the ending, fire burns the entire forest, signifying Thomas's victory, and burning the evidence and the bodies in the forest as a way to never let Jamie find out about the truth ever again after he erases her memories.
*The people in the pictures in her albums slowly disappear and is only replaced with her and Thomas in those moments, completely erasing everything and only making her world revolve around him.
