Jamie Beille-Farris is a deaf 16 year old due to a plane accident that caused her biological father's death and her loss of hearing. With the help of hearing aids, the sounds around her are amplified. Despite the loss, her family moves on, her mother remarries and now are blessed with a younger brother named Dieter. The story starts with the family being frantic as they prepare to welcome the first foster child they have taken in. Jamie's parents are worried and reluctant that Jamie might be against this idea and would be bothered; unconsciously painting her as a growing antagonist, although Jamie is the complete opposite of their views and is willing to welcome the foster kid.
Jamie meets Enoch, the foster kid. She immediately becomes visibly disturbed at the sight of Enoch's unusual gray skin, the rotting smell coming from him, and how he barely has any shadow at all. All of these, only Jamie could see.
Jamie's reaction and her unsettled behaviour makes her parents concerned if she holds any resentment to the idea of having a foster brother.
Although Jamie is more concerned on what Enoch truly is, her parents misinterpreted her actions to protect her sibling as acts of jealousy and spite towards Enoch instead.
Enoch's reason for targeting the family was because they reeked of each kinds of grief that they hold and keep. Despite being a loving family, they bottle their own doubts and grief deep inside. Their individual griefs made the family vulnerable, and their faiths in their religion waver and shake, making it easy for Enoch to attack and enter their home.
Enoch slowly eats their souls and feeds them doubts and twists the family's mind to soak even more in grief, making them drained and slowly marinating themselves in anchoring emotions that Enoch finds delectable.
After Jamie's sacrifice, her family is left scarred of losing both Dieter and Jamie. The family had gotten quieter, but the horrifying events made them grow closer and this time, no longer hide any fears or griefs to grow within any of them.
