Once the feat began, Phil and I barely had time to do more than sneak a look at each other. We were too busy stuffing our faces with the arrangement of food set out on the tables before us.
Gryffindor? Phil mouthed to me from his seat at the Hufflepuff table across the way. I just nodded and shrugged and turned my attention back to eating. I felt bad right away and looked back up at him with apologetic eyes. But my friend had turned back around to face his own table.
I couldn't stop myself from questioning the way I was going with Phil. Phil seemed to be talkative and trying to get to know me better, like he actually wanted us to be friends. I was trying to return the feelings and show Phil that I truly wanted to be his friend, but my normal actions got in the way. Usually I would just use gestures as answers and try to keep to myself. I was worried it would even scare Phil off if i kept acting the way I was so far. But I wasn't quite sure how to change it for the better.
After the feast was over, we were lead straight to our dormitories and I didn't get a chance to see or say anything to Phil. I slumped into my dorm along with some other first years that were in my house. They didn't seem like the type of people I would usually pick as friends, but they may be the only people I could be with. Other than hopefully Phil, of course. I silently hoped that Phil would still want to be friends when they saw each other next, because I really wanted to get to know him.
At breakfast the next day, the heads of houses walked around and handed out timetables. I had transfiguration first with the Hufflepuffs. I immediately got excited because that meant Phil would be there. We would finally be able to see each other, even if we didn't get the chance to talk. I just hoped the professor would possibly sit us next to each other. That would definitely be a dream come true. But what were the chances?
It ended up that it was my lucky day. I walked into the class 2 minutes late, as I had gotten stuck on a moving staircase. It brought me all the way over towards the entrance to the dungeons and I nearly fell down the stairs. But Mr. Filch had found me and practically pulled me along to my class. But when I got there, the professor had already seated everyone and changed herself into a cat. I was confused at first when I only saw a cat but realized that the cat was actually our professor. She changed herself back into a cat and started addressing my earlier absence.
"Late on the first day, Mr. Howell? Let's not make it a habit, please." She scolded. "Please sit next to Mr. Lester, he is your partner for the year."
I smiled to myself and slid into the seat next to him. He smiled at me and turned his attention back to the front and the professor.
"I'm sorry about last night, I got ushered out and couldn't find you" I wrote on a piece of paper and slid it over to him.
"it's really no problem, the same happened to me" He quickly scribbled back.
"Mr. Howell! Mr. Lester! Stop writing love notes and pay attention! It's the first day and definitely not the time to be slacking off. if I see it again, you will read it in front of the class!"
We both turned red and the professor turned around with a smug grin.
"oops" I scribbled quickly and slid it over.
He looked at it and smiled at me.
I think my heart was racing at that cute little grin settled on his face for the remainder of the lesson.
[A/N- sorry about the rambling and the confusion of the whole thing]
