"Just how long are you going to keep that human?" Garry walked up beside me and whispered. I shrugged, knowing that one day, we would have to part ways. We were just going to go against the bad hybrids and save humanity from facing extinction. The humans were still alive. In fact, many were captured for slavery. They would have to serve the opposition for who knows how long. Thinking about that just made me scowl in both disgust and anger.
"Try not to get too attached to him... You know that you would not be able to handle the pain that comes when you return him to his rightful species and parents," Garry said as he placed a hand on my shoulder. I looked him in the eye, and I saw the pain and sorrow in his eyes.
"I don't want you to suffer like I did. As simple as that. Leaving hurts, alright?" He whispered as he slowly walked off to get some shut eye. I sighed. At that point of time, I was not able to understand the pain he had gone through. Dying... The loss of a loved one... It was not something us hybrids experienced often. After all, we could not die from old age. Although so, some still could not escape from the clutches of death. One of the unfortunate ones was Garry's... girlfriend. Well, soon to be wife. He had proposed to her the day before everything went upside down.
Thinking about the incident made me remember his agonised scream, filled with anger, pain, sorrow and of course, agony. He was angry at those who killed her, at himself for not holding her back from her mission and not being able to protect her. The pain he must have felt... The sorrow, agony, anger... Is something I may not ever experience ever in my life. Well, I do have this human that may make me experience these things when I return him.
"Hmm... Big sis?" a quiet voice asked. Turning around, I realised that Jay was awake. He tugged on my shirt, making me kneel down so that I was at his height.
"Yes Jay?" I smiled as I asked.
"Why are you helping me?" he asked. I was taken aback. This child. Honestly, since hybrids were taller than average human height, I had no idea how old Jay was. However, if he were a kid, that would mean that he knew what was going on at such a young age. How cruel could this world be?
"Jay..." I started,
"I just... couldn't accept that you would be all alone out in the streets with a low possibility to live. Plus, you're just a child, well that's what I think you are. There's still much of the world for you to see."
"I'm 10 so I guess that's a child's age," Jay yawned as he talked.
"But big sis... Are you going to save my parents and friends?" Jay asked with glassy eyes.
"I can't promise you... But my friends and I will definitely give our best to save them!" I said as I gave the air a punch. Jay gave me a tired smile as he hugged me.
"Now Jay, my turn to ask you a question," I said as he let go.
"Yes?" he tilted his head.
"What... made you so sure you could trust me?" I asked him as I held one of my arms close to my body. He blinked. Once. Twice. Still silent. I looked at him again and he was smiling widely.
"Big sis... You brought me to shelter, gave me food and protected me! Also, you give off a kind aura! How could I not trust you?" Jay lunged forward and hugged me as he replied with a matter-of-factly tone.
"Mm... Thank you, Jay," I whispered as I hugged him back and put him back to the make shift bed and let him sleep. I could do nothing but sigh as I sat on the floor next to Jay. ... I do not think I can hand you back without crying...
