Scarlet Arrow

Chapter 3

The next thing I know all of us are standing in an abandoned barn house circling around Dick. "Okay, in order to work together, fight and defend yourselves like a coordinated team, we gotta see what each other can do. Any volunteers?"

No one says anything.

He looks at Kory, "Kory, Rachel said you can create light. Heat. Is that right?"

"Honestly, I'm still trying to figure it out." She tells him.

"Okay so let's figure it out together." Hesays.

"Couple goals." I sing to Rachel barely audible to the others.

Dick continues, "How exactly does it work?"

"Think it comes from the sun. I can absorb its power and direct it. I'm weaker at night, though. I'm sometimes empty. And it takes me a while to recharge."

"How long?" He questions her.

"A few hours a day, I don't know."

He questions her again, "Can you control it?"

She looks him directly in the eye, "Of course."

"Okay, could you hit that tractor?"

"Watch." Kory walks in front of us all and begins to glow. She blasts her fire at the wall behind the tractor making the wall catch fire. The fire doesn't last and goes out when she looks normal again. "I suppose I could use a bit of practice."

"Sick!" Gar says his voice cracking a little bit.

"Your turn." Dick says, looking at Gar.

"Okay, I just, uh… Give me a second." He said. He goes in front of us and faces towards the wall. He does a few shoulder rolls and pops his neck.

"Okay any time today would be good." Dick tells the boy.

"Do you need some privacy or something?" I ask.

Gar turns around, "It's uhh… I can't… It's a little weird with you guys watching and all. The first time I transformed, I tore through my clothes and, uh, this is my favorite jacket." He tells us.

"Hold on. You have to be naked to…" Gar cuts him off though.

"Well, yeah, but it'll be worth it. I promise!" He says.

Kory snorts, "Ha, heard that one before!" I hit her arm and gave her a playful glare.

"Just, uh, turn around!" he tells us.

I turn around to face a brick wall that has a staircase and two windows.

"If this was a drill we'd all be dead by now." Kory muses.

I hear rustling behind me then I hear a small thump. I turn around right as he roars.

"Oh shit!" Dick mutters when he turns around and sees Gar. Gar walks towards us a bit and Dick hides behind Kory.

"Well now we know Dick is scared of big green cats!"  I say as Gar jumps on top of a few haystacks.  

Kory laughs, "Well what do ya know! It was with it!"

"That's him?" Dick asks, still very scared.

"No, it is the tiger that ate him." I roll my eyes at him. "Yes, it's him."

"How?"

"Got sick or something." Rachel told us.

"The flu turned him into a tiger?" Kory asks.

Gar growls something like a "Yeah".

Gar comes down closer to us but Dick gets scared and says, "Okay, you can turn back now. Into Gar." Kory hits his arm in a playful manner.

He transforms back into a human right in front of us. I think he forgot he changed back naked because when he is transformed back into himself completely he yells "Tada!" and holds his arms out. Kory bursts out laughing.

Rachel clears her throat and says "Gar." and motions her eyes down.

I snorted and said, "I think you forgot something."

He looks down and cuffs himself with his hands. He gives us a nervous chuckle then runs behind the hey. When he comes back he is fully clothed. And he zips his fly up.

Dick looks at me with a pursed smile, "Alright, Madeleine show us what you can do!" He moves out of the way. "Wait. you might want this." He  hands me a pen then walks back to the rest of the group.

I open the pen and a bow appears, and three arrows come out from the side and into my hand. I look back at him with my mouth wide open. "How did you know?!"

He just gives me a look So I knock an arrow on the bow. I start to aim but Dick tells me to hit the little mirror that is on the tractor. I reposition myself so the arrow is lined up perfectly, and let go. It hit the mirror off the tractor and it landed on the ground with the arrow perfectly lodged in the middle of it.

I turn around and see Dick pulling out a dagger. It was a dull one but had a short handle with a circle at the end. He threw it up and I quickly knocked another bow and let go. It went through the whole and took the dagger with the tail of the bow. It kept going and hit the wall behind us.

Everybody turns to look at the arrow and dagger. They all have shocked looks while Dick has a smug grin. I make sure they can’t see me to turn invisible. I quickly put my arrow down and run behind the hay Gar jumped on earlier. I make a clone of myself and make it pick up the bow.

Everyone turns back to look at my clone when I make it say, “Well, now you’ve seen what I can do, “What about you Dick?”

He doesn’t answer. He steps in front of the clone and says, “You can come out, Leine.”  I make my clone go away and step out.

“How did you know?!” I ask fuming up to him, while crossing my arms. He gives me a mischievous look in his eyes but doesn’t say anything.

Now I am mad. He doesn’t know anything about me and somehow he was able to figure out that the fake me was a fake! I storm out of the barn into the sun and teleport to my room. I sit on my bed defeated.

When I got back up I went to the bathroom to turn on a warm shower. Maybe the warmth will calm me down. I go back out to turn on the TV and an idea comes to mind. I quickly run back to the bathroom and turn the bath faucet instead of the shower. I come back out to put cartoons on. I go back to the bathroom and the bathtub is almost full.

I quickly discard my clothes and slip into the tub. I immediately feel my muscles relax which makes my anger slowly dissipates.  I feel myself closing my eyes and the sleepiness taking over. I haven’t gotten much sleep the last couple of days so I let my eyes close. Soon I can’t stop myself from falling into an unconscious state.
