I know I know, I'm making quite a bit of Sword & Shield updates for this book but I'm currently replaying the games & catch onto things throughout my playthroughs.
Professor Sonia, or Sonia as we're introduced to her initially, was a complete missed opportunity. What sort of Opportunity you may ask? Well, as a trainer of course!

When you're introduced to Sonia as one of your traveling companions in Sword & Shield, Leon talks about how he & Sonia used to be bestfriends back in the day. Sonia adds on that when they were 10 years old, they did the gym challenge together. This conversation alone tells us that Sonia used to be a pretty decent Pokemon Trainer. In fact, as you play through Sword & Shield, Sonia repeatedly mentions that she's capable enough as a trainer that she can handle the Wild Area & all the routes throughout Galar on her own. Therefore, Sonia is STILL a Pokemon trainer and a capable one at that.
So what am I getting at?
How come we never fight Sonia in Sword & Shield?
I feel like NOT being able to battle Sonia in Sword & Shield is a heavily missed opportunity. It wouldn't be the first time we fought a Pokemon Professor, like seriously you can fight Professor Kukui & Commander Kamado (Prof. Rowan's ancestor) in other titles, & if you repeatedly wave it in our face that Sonia is a Pokemon Trainer then PLEASE allow us to fight her!!! I mean honestly, Sonia might be an easy or even forgettable fight if we were given the opportunity to face her in battle, but I feel as though we were robbed. Honestly, I feel that fighting Sonia would've been easy to incorporate into the story. Like being able to fight her after you're given your Pokedex as a tutorial battle or even being able to fight alongside Sonia in the Post Game/DLC Championship Cup where you can fight alongside ALL of the gymleaders, rivals & champions. Even characters that were none of the above were featured in the tournament too.
Or, at least bare minimum, Sonia's League Card should've been available to the player cause I would've liked to know what Pokemon Sonia uses, if she completed her Gym Challenge, if her & Leon used to be rivals? Did she have a Gigantamax Pokemon? These are the things I want to know!!!
