Torterra, the Continent Pokemon
Avalugg, the Iceberg Pokemon
Are they related?
Today I'm talking about how I firmly believe Torterra & Avalugg are distant relatives!!! Especially since in Legends Arceus, we get even more evidence for this claim.
Let me just start out with when Pokemon X & Y released many years ago and I stumbled upon Avalugg in the wild, I IMMEDIATELY thought that Avalugg was an ice typed Torterra. Keep in mind that X & Y was made before regional variants were established. So already, maybe Avalugg was Pokemon's way of giving us a regional variant of Torterra? I mean heck, they have the exact same body type, eyes & whatever the heck those spikes are on the sides of their heads.
Next up, Torterra is the Continent Pokemon while Avalugg is the Iceberg Pokemon. Torterra & Avalugg are surprisingly a big part of the land be it they ARE part of the land and help shape it. This is where Legends Arceus fits in. In Legends Arceus, you fight a noble Avalugg of which is GIGANTIC in size. It is the biggest Pokemon in existence no joke. Well, if you read Torterra's pokedex entries as well as seen Detective Pikachu, there's reasons why Torterra is the CONTINENT Pokemon. Torterra can grow to be the size of literal Continents.
Even more on Legends Arceus, in distant history Avalugg & Torterra used to be found in the same region! That being the Hisui/Sinnoh region. Avalugg used to look different in the past and used to be differently typed. Hisuian Avalugg being Rock Ice type while Torterra is Ground Grass type. Nine times out of ten, Rock type Pokemon are normally Rock Ground or Rock Steel typed. So not only are Avalugg & Torterra's types similar, they used to be found in the same region. No joke, I feel that Pokemon is heavily hitting us over the head saying that Torterra & Avalugg are related without directly telling us. In all honesty, I'd like Avalugg more if Avalugg was instead a regional or extinct form of Torterra.
What about you? Do you think Avalugg & Torterra are distantly related?
