OPHELIA DARLING SMILED at Duncan and Isadora Quagmire, who were hungrily devouring the food in front of them. They had probably been starved and knowing Count Olaf, it didn't seem like he could provide them adequate food.
She went up to her room, trying to find a spare change of clothes, Isadora's wouldn't be a problem but Duncan's would be, as they were no boys in her home.
Opening her closet, and picking out a simple white dress for Isadora, she quickly walked downstairs, but before she could say anything, the door of her house opened.
"Honey! Are you--." Her mother stopped dead as she noticed two unfamiliar children in her room. The children sheepishly smiled at her.
"Mom, thank god you are here!" The blonde rushed forward and started explaining in hyper speed, the situation they were in. Her mother listened attentively to her daughter, a soft smile making its way on her face. As she peered into her daughter's doe-like blue eyes, she could feel herself getting more proud of her daughter.
"--And they are Duncan and Isadora Quagmire," Ophelia explained as she gestured towards the other two children.
Her mother peered down at the children, who she had babysat once upon a time, and noticed the empty plates on the dining table.
"Isadora, here you can change into this," Ophelia offered the dress to Isadora and Isadora nodded and went to Ophelia's room to change when the blonde gave her directions.
"I may have some clothes for you as well, Duncan," Ophelia's mother said thoughtfully as she went upstairs. Hearing the sweet and reassuring tone, Duncan relaxed slightly. The woman seemed kind and charming.
Isadora and Diana returned. Isadora looked way better now, she had washed her face and had worn Ophelia's white dress, which made her appear very pretty. She still had her school shoes on though. Diana offered the clothes to Duncan, and he appeared less than a minute later.
The blue pants and the button-up shirt, made Duncan appear even more charming. Ophelia could see why Violet liked him. The thought made her frown unintentionally.
"Thank you so much," Both of them said in unison, and the mother-daughter duo smiled at them.
"Now that you both are done up, there is something important to reconsider," Ophelia said. "As I have already told you, the Baudelaires are in jail and we need to do something to free them.
"Knowing Violet's inventive genius and Klaus's intelligence." Isadora said, blushing a little at the 'Klaus' part. "I think they have freed themselves already."
"I wouldn't doubt it," Duncan agreed.
"Let's check to make sure then," Ophelia said, opening the door.
"There is no need to panic or check children." Ophelia's mother reassured. "Help is coming."
"Forgive me if I sound rude, ma'am, but every time when we have trusted adults to save us or help us they have always let us down," Isadora told her, a little sadness evident in her tone.
"No need to call me, ma'am, call me Diana," Diana reassured them and gently put her hands on both of their shoulders. "I know all of the pain, you all went through, believe it or not, but your parents and I used to be great friends." Both of the Quagmires looked at her with widened eyes, shocked.
"You--you were friends with our parents?" Duncan asked in utter disbelief.
Diana let out a soft, sad smile and nodded her head. The Quagmires shared looks. They were about to ask more questions, but ultimately deciding not to, as they had to look for the Baudelaires first. The questions, they decided quietly, could wait. The Baudelaires had become their first priority.
