"If I told you that someone filmed our performance for Canada and someone in Paris saw it and fell in love with us, would you believe me?"
"What?" I asked Mitch, staring at him in disbelief.
"We're going to Paris."
"You're kidding."
"I'm not, I swear I'm not."
"We're going to Paris? We're going to Paris!"
"We're international! Officially!"
I gave Mitch a hug. "You're already doing bigger things than your dad ever did."
"I'm trying. I may have been lacking the motivation lately, but I'm trying. And my new additions should be added by tonight."
"I know! I'm excited! It's literally been painful to have you secretly snooping around talking about stuff that I can't know."
"Oh you big baby, you'll know tonight."
"And don't we have a celebratory dinner with Kirstie and Jeremy?"
"Yes."
I gave him another hug, just because I could and wanted to. I kissed his forehead before speaking. "You know that I'm extremely proud of you, right? This company couldn't be half of what it is if it wasn't for you."
"Are you kidding? It's all the people like you that keep me inspired."
"I love you."
"I promise that I love you more."
"Want a bet?"
---
"Hi everyone!" Mitch said into the microphone. A few more people, including Kirstie, filed into the auditorium.
"Excuse me. Sorry. Oh, sorry." She whispered as she weaved herself through people to where I had saved her a seat. "That took eight years." She huffed as she sat down.
"As you all know, new things are coming to the company," Mitch continued. People began cheering at the news. "And tonight you will all learn about it. For starters, I just want to give a shout out to our very own Kevin Olusola who is in New York right now performing for thousands." A cheer erupted in the crowd. "Second, I want to thank our extraordinary staff that helped us organize and put together an event that we hosted last month. Next, I want to congratulate and welcome on stage a few people. If you are an intern for any program within the company, would you please come on stage at this time." Kirstie gave me a nudge. I rolled my eyes and got up, navigating my way towards the stage. "Please give a round of applause for our interns this year! I am happy to announce that you've all had flawless evaluations by your mentors, and as of today, are official employees of Grassi's Media." A loud applause echoed through the whole auditorium for the group of us. Mitch went down the line, giving everyone a handshake. He lingered a bit longer for mine.
"Welcome to the team," Kirstie said when I returned to my seat. "How does it feel?"
"Not very different, actually. But thank you."
Mitch's voice returned. "Now I would like to show you a video put together by some of our very own that will show you our next company wide project." The lights dimmed and the screen came down. A ten minute video played on our new project: The Next Generation. It was probably the cheesiest thing I've watched. It just explained how we'd all incorporate our different skills and educate kids to help them find their talents and interests.
"I'm sure you've all heard about the changes I've wanted to make to the company. After thinking about it, I decided not to take away any programs. But I will be adding some and for each, a head of the program." A few stray claps came from the audience. "Wow, only a couple people are excited about promotions?" Mitch joked. "Okay, now to announce our new programs. The first will be the Instrumental Program, ranging from an orchestra to a rock band. This program will be headed by Kevin Olusola, who we know is not here tonight. Congratulations, Kevin. The next program is honestly one that I wanted to head myself more than you'll ever know. But it's the theatre program and it will be headed by Kirstin Maldonado." I looked at Kirstie who seemed completely shocked.
"Congrats, girl!" I whispered before she walked to the stage. Mitch gave her a hug and a badge of some sort that probably said her new title.
"Another program we're adding is photography. The head will be Ben Vogel." Mitch announced the rest of the programs such as, fashion headed by Candice Lambert and cosmetics headed by Genevieve Lamb. We finally made it to the last one, and I couldn't be happier. It'd been a long day and I was exhausted.
"Our last program will be Art. This program can range from sketches to paintings, all headed by Scott Hoying."
Kirstie cheered obnoxiously loud and I felt my cheeks heating up. I'd literally been an intern no more than an hour ago, and now I was the head of my own program.
"Congrats, babe," Mitch whispered when I got on stage. He gave me my badge and I went back to my seat.
"Thank you all for putting up with my talking today. I hope you're just as excited for what new things have been added to the company, and all the many more that are to come. Transitioning to owning a company on such short notice could've been brutal, but you all supported me. Thank you and have a great night." Everyone cheered and clapped one last time before beginning to exit the auditorium. Mitch talked to a few people before walking over to Kirstie and me. Kirsite's phone began to ring, which was perfect because I wanted to talk to Mitch. I pulled him outside.
"What's up?" He asked. I could feel my eyes filling with tears. "Hon, what's wrong?"
"I just-thank you so much. I wouldn't-I don't know what I'd do without you. Not only are you an amazing boyfriend, but boss as well. I've learned so much and grown as a performer and person in general. And now I'm heading my own program and it's all just so surreal."
"Aw, you're so cute. Don't cry."
I laughed, wiping my tears. "I'm trying not to. I'm just so grateful."
"I'm so proud of you."
"Thank you for everything, I love you."
"And I love you, Mr.Art."
