To Mitch: You awake?
From Mitch: Yeah...you shouldn't be up it's past your bedtime
To Mitch: I want to talk to you
From Mitch: What a coincidence because I want to talk to you too
To Mitch: I miss you. I wish you were here right now. I just want to climb into bed next to you. I want you in my arms
From Mitch: Me too. I want nothing more than to wake up in your arms
To Mitch: I miss you. I already said that but I do, so much.
Then my phone began ringing.
"Hello?"
"Hey." Mitch's soft, sleepy voice filled my ears and I began grinning like an idiot.
"What's up?"
"You're so dumb. It's one in the morning what in the world could I possibly be doing?"
I laughed lightly. "I don't know, there's a lot of things to do in Washington."
"Oh shutup. I just wanted to hear your voice."
"God, Mitch. I miss you so much."
"You do realize that it's only my second night away, we need to pull it together."
"I hate business trips."
"You hate them? All of these fancy men in suits are asses and I have to go from meeting to meeting with them."
"Then don't go," I whined.
"I kind of own the company, it's my job."
"Then I'll just wait for you patiently until you get back."
He laughed. "Patiently? That's a joke."
"Whatever. Just expect a big ass hug when you get back."
"Can't wait."
"Do you have a meeting early in the morning?"
"No, all yours tonight. Even if I had meeting, I'd lose sleep to talk to you."
"I think this is love."
"Love is a lot of things."
"Oh really? Please tell me Mr.Expert."
I could hear Mitch moving his position in bed, he was probably laying on his back now. "Well, before you texted me I was thinking about us. What we are and what we could be, but mostly what we could be. I can't wait to have a family with you, sleep with my head on your chest every night with our legs tangled together, make you breakfast every morning, come home from work together. I can't wait for everything."
I sat in a stunned silence. Everytime I opened my mouth to say something, I'd shut it again in fear that what I'd say wouldn't measure up. I settled on silence, and it worked it better than any words. We listened to each other's breaths as we grew more and more tired.
"I'm going to fall asleep," I whispered.
"Same here."
"I shoud hang up, but I really don't want to."
"It's fine, see you in three days Barbie boy."
"Three days. I love you."
"I love you too. Sleep well, babe."
And with that he hung up. I curled up and hugged my pillow, pretending it was him.
Three days.
-----
"Keep the change," I said to the barista at Starbucks.
"Thank you, have a nice day."
I gave her a smile before walking towards the baggage claim. I went on my phone and scrolled through Instagram before putting it away and just nervously waiting. I hadn't seen Mitch in what felt like forever.
Groups of people began walking towards me. A group of students, an elderly couple, a family of six, but the one person I wanted to see wasn't there.
But then I saw him.
He smiled wide at me and began running. I held out my arms and he jumped into them, wrapping his legs around my waist.
"Missed you so much, baby," I whispered as we spun around.
He unwrapped his legs and we stood in front of each other.
"Hi," he whispered.
Our lips met and we showed how much we missed each other within the single kiss.
He pulled away. "Get my bag for me? I have to go to the bathroom," he said. His hips swayed as he walked away.
I picked up his bag and threw away my Starbucks cup before meeting him outside of the bathroom.
He took my hand in his and we walked to my car.
-----
"I'm so fucking happy to have you home," I said as he cuddled into me.
"Trust me, I'm happier. Those hotel beds have nothing on your strong arms."
I gave him a tight squeeze as his head fell onto my chest.
He was here in my bed tonight, and that was all I could wish for.
