Jennie sat in the living room, hugging a pillow to Lisa her nerves. What was she doing? Inviting Lisa over?
To stay the night? She must be insane! She was only thankful that Lisa seemed to catch onto what she was getting at before she had to really ask.
But even at four in the afternoon, only a few hours after the twins left, Jennie was getting nervous. She kept feeling like someone was watching her, and sometimes it made it hard to breathe. The thought of sleeping alone in the house knowing that Kai was in town somewhere...
The doorbell rang, and Jennie launched the pillow she was holding in surprise. Gathering herself, she walked swiftly over to the door and pulled it open.
Lisa was standing there in a hoodie and ripped jeans, her backpack slung over her shoulder. She looked nervous, and Jennie was relieved she wasn't the only one.
"That was fast." she commented.
Lisa scratched the back of her neck. "Yeah, well, I was kind of already out and about anyway."
Jennie stepped aside to let her in, and Lisa looked around the entryway.
"Nice house," she said.
"I thought you being rich was just a rumour."
"I'm not rich," Jennie replied indignantly.
"Oh, a cat!"
Lisa rushed off before Jennie could even blink. She ran over to the grey ball of fur perched on the back of the living room couch. Jennie walked over, amused at how excited Lisa was.
"I didn't know you had a cat!" Lisa said.
"I'm more of a dog person, but we took her after a family friend of ours had to move," Jennie explained.
Lisa raised an eyebrow at Jennie.
"You? A dog person?"
"You shouldn't judge a book by its cover," Jennie teased. "Anyway, her name's Donut."
Lisa laughed, seeming to make the cat mildly uncomfortable as she was barraged with pets. "What kind of name is that?"
"My brother's name her, not me."
"You have brothers?" Lisa asked, looking genuinely curious.
"Yeah, I've got two younger brothers. They're twins."
"You don't seem like the older sister type," Lisa commented with a sly smile. "I thought for sure you'd be an only child."
Jennie crossed her arms. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing, nothing."
A wave of silence fell around the two, and Jennie started to feel a sense of awkwardness between them.
After all, they weren't exactly friends, but here they were, alone in Jennie's house.
Jennie cleared her throat, trying desperately to find something to talk about. "Well...it's a little early, but did you want to get something for dinner?"
"Let's cook something.
"Huh?"
"We should just cook something,'" Lisa said, smiling.
"It's something to do. And I want to see if you're a good cook or not."
Jennie put her hands on her hips. "I'll have you know I'm an excellent cook."
"What's your best dish then?"
"I'm best at Italian food, so probably lasagne."
"Then let's make some lasagne," Lisa suggested.
