Harry tosses my duffle bag into the back seat along with his, rolling his shoulders at the weight as he mutters under his breath.
The sun sat high in the sky, beaming down on my bare feet as they rested on Harry's dash. My skin felt hot, especially since I wore one of Harry's thick hoodies to hide my belly. We were getting ready to leave for Addison and I still didn't know how I felt.
Part of me was nervous about simply being there, and the other part was nervous about having to actually go to court. I know nothing about owning properties or pleading my case, which is why I considered giving the church over to the city. But I couldn't do that. I don't know why my dad left me the thing, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't so I could sell it.
Harry brings the car to life with a sigh, pulling his shades from his face and placing them in the cupholder and I pull the hoodie off, leaving me in the tight-fitting tank top.
He looks comfortable in his denim shorts and pale pink tee-shirt, his brown waves tied up into a little ponytail as he runs a hand over his face before placing the car in reverse and tossing a hand over the back of my chair to circle the steering wheel with his palm.
He was at work since I woke up. By the time I finished cleaning my room and packing my bag, he was already there, slapping at the bathroom door to rush me out of my shower since he didn't want to be driving in dark. He seemed to be a little on edge as well but I think it has more to do with his work, he's always fidgety when he gets home.
"I need to get gas before we get on the highway, you want something to eat?"
"No, Julio made me some alfredo," I mindlessly rub my hand over my belly, pressing my palm on the side to provoke some type of movement.
"Since when did he take orders from you without me being there?" Harry shoots me a glance as we pull off from a red light.
I shrug, "Since I've been living with you for a month, maybe."
The conversation ends there, with Harry muttering something under his breath once more.
We pull up to a gas station and it's fairly packed with it being three in the afternoon. Harry parks the car and turns it off, immediately getting out and paying at the pump. I lean forward and watch him as he taps at the screen with one hand on his hip the way he always posed when he was frustrated.
It was then that I decided that I could go for a snack, so I open the car door and step out, meeting eyes with a squinted Harry.
He seems to read my mind, because he instantly reaches into his pocket and slides his black card across the roof of the car, "Get me a coke,"
"Please?" I grab the card.
"Give me a coke, please," He smiles sarcastically, "And hurry up, I'm exhausted."
"Whatever you say,"
The bell above me rings as I enter the small store. I walk toward the drinks and grab Harry's coke before going toward the chips, getting myself a pack of Doritos as well as peanut butter crackers. When I remember I haven't got anything to drink, I make myself a blue raspberry slushie and at the counter, I grab a honey bun and a pecan roll.
"When's the mixtape drop?" The guy behind the counter asks, smiling down at my belly as he rings the items up.
"Just in time for the festivities," I smile back. This is the first time anybody has acknowledged my pregnancy in public and it feels nice.
"Sweet, I have a one-year-old, she was born in October last year. Get ready for the halloween slash birthday gifts to run your pockets dry," He jokes.
"Oh gosh, I hadn't even thought about that."
