CHAPTER SIX
" floor 139. ".• MARA TRAVELLED ALONGSIDE THE DOCTOR. Her arm linked with his as they wandered around. Mara literally wanted to faint because of how boiling it was. Could it get any hotter? I mean, it was already hot because Mara arrived but still! Turn the heating down a little, would you? She used her hand to fan off her face.
"You all right?" The Doctor asked, looking down at her. She nodded while fanning her face.
"Yup, just.." She paused while stopping to fan her face once again. "it's roasting in here!" The Doctor laughed slightly, looking down at her with a large smile. "What?" She looked at him with a confused face.
"Nothing. Come on." The Doctor shook his head, dragging Mara over to two women. "Erm, this is gonna sound daft but can you tell me where we are?" The woman in the suit almost rolled her eyes at his stupidity while pointing to the MASSIVE number.
"Floor 139. Could they write it any bigger?" Mara held back her small laugh. How did they miss that?
"Floor 139 of what?" Mara looked towards the other woman who was looking her up and down with a smile. She waved slightly but didn't get one back.
"Must've been one hell of a party." The woman moved her head closer.
"You're on Satellite Five." The other woman told them, smiling wildly.
"And what is Satellite Five exactly?" Mara asked, her arms crossing after she removed her hand from the doctor's arm.
"How could you get on board without knowing where you are?" The annoyed woman asked with, you guessed it, annoyance in her voice.
"Look at him! He's stupid!" Mara pointed at the Doctor's face before shrugging. "Guess I am too. I mean, didn't notice the massive bloody number on the wall." She muttered afterwards while pouring.
"Hold on, wait a minute..." The happier woman looked between the two. "Are you two a test? Some sort of management test kind of thing?" Test? Yeah, totally, a test.
"You've got us! Well done." The Doctor congratulated the girl while showing her the psychic paper. "You're two clever for us."
The two women looked at each other. "We were warned about this in basic training. All workers have to be versed in company promotion." The happier one explained to the other woman.
"Right, fire away, ask your questions. If it gets me to floor five hundred, I'll do anything." She smiled while pointing towards a closed lift. 'What's on floor 500?' Mara asked in her mind while the Doctor actually asked the two girls. "The walls are made of gold! And you should know, Mr Management. So... this is what we do."
Mara looked up from her spacing out and looked at the happy woman, they smiled at each other before following the Doctor and the, now happy, other woman. They were brought over to a bunch of tv screens, all different things on them. "Latest news! Sandstorms on the New Venus Archipelago, 200 dead. Glasgow water riots into their third day. Spacelane 77 closed by sunspot activity."
"And over on the Bad Wolf channel, The face of Boe has just announced he's pregnant." Mara had a small smile on her face when she heard that. 'Good for Boe!' She thought before her eyebrows furrowed. 'Bad Wolf?'
"I get it. You broadcast the news." The Doctor almost shrugged.
The woman almost looked offended. "We ARE the news. We're the journalists." The other woman and Mara shared a smile once more while the other continued to speak. "We write it, package it and sell it. 600 channels, all coming out of Satellite Five, broadcasting everywhere."
"Nothing happens on the Empire without it going through us." Little did the group know, that a few floors above them, someone was watching. Listening.

Mara stood to the side, trying to calm down her wings. They were getting restless and bored. They wanted to fly but they couldn't exactly do that could they. A few moments ago they had gotten Adam and Rose, now they were in a strange white room. "Now everybody behave, we have a management inspection. How'd you want it, by the book?
"Right from scratch, thanks." The Doctor nodded before glancing back at Mara.
"Okay. So! Ladies, gentlemen, multisex, undecided or robot, my name is Cathica Santini Khadeni. That's Cathica with a C, in case you want to write Floor 500, praising me. And please do." Cathica nodded towards the Doctor and the group with a smile. "Now, please feel free to ask any questions. The process of news gathering must be open, honest and beyond bias. That's company policy."
"A-Actually, erm, it's the law." The happier one smiled from where she sat.
"Yes, thank you, Suki." Cathica glared at Suki. "Okay, keep it calm. Don't show off for the guests. Here we go. And..." She walked towards the chair and sat on it, staring forward. "Engage safety." Everyone put their hands above the handprints white Cathica snapped her fingers. It opened a bloody door on her head.
Mara, Adam and Rose all stared in shock at that. The Doctor kept a straight face. "And three... Two.. and spike!" A blue glowing light travelled towards the door on her head. Mara gasped while figuring it out.
"Compressed information, it's flowing into her brain! Reports from every planet, country, city, everywhere! All packaged inside her head, she's part of the software, the computer." Mara whispered from behind the Doctor as she looked over his shoulder.
"If it all goes through her, she must be a genius." Rose muttered while looking up at the Doctor, ignoring Mara.
"Nah, she wouldn't remember any of it. There's too much. Her head'd blow up! The brains the processor. Soon as it closes, she forgets." The Doctor, Mara and Rose all walked around the group of people, their eyes all closed, as their hands sat on the metal plates.
"What about these people around the edge?" Rose asked the Doctor.
"They've all got tiny chips in their head, connecting them to her. And they transmit. 600 channels. Every single fact in the empire beaks out of this place. Now that's what I call power." Rose walked back over to Adam.
"You all right?" She asked him. Adam pointed to Cathica.
"I can see her brain."
"D'you wanna get out?"
"No, but this... this technology, it's... amazing."
"This technology's wrong." The three others looked at the Doctor, mostly in confusion.
"Trouble?" Rose asked making the Doctor look at them all with a small smirk which became a smile. "Oh, yeah." He replied.
There was a strange noise and soon everyone's eyes opened while Suki rubbed her hand. "Come off it, Suki. It wasn't even halfway! What was that for?" Cathica asked Suki angrily as she sat up.
"Sorry. It must've been a glitch." Suki cried while rubbing her hands. "Promotion." A robotic voice echoed in the room, a blue screen appearing.
"Come on, this is it, come on!" Cathica muttered. "Oh, my god, make it me! Come on, say my name, say my name, say my name!"
Mara looked at Cathica and then at the screen. "Promotion for... Suki Macrae Cantrell. Please proceed to floor 500." Suki gasped, standing up while Cathica looked angry almost.
"I don't believe it! Floor 500!" She muttered, a smile on her face while she stepped towards the screen. Cathica yelled towards her.
"How the hell did you manage that? I'm above you!"
"I don't know, I just applied on the off chance. And they've said yes!" Suki yelled with excitement turning to face Cathica then the screen again.
"Oh, it's so not fair, I've been applying to Floor 500 for three years!"
Rose looked towards the Doctor. "What's floor 500?"
"The walls are made of gold."
