CHAPTER EIGHT
" The Empty Child. "

.*• —— MARA gripped the Tardis console tightly as the whole room shook. Her fingers were gripping the console as she watched over the doctor's shoulder. The group, plus the Tardis, was in pursuit of a small spacecraft. They were chasing it through space. "What's the emergency?" Rose asked as she wobbled around.

"It's mauve." The Doctor spoke shortly while Rose ran around to the two time-lords.

"Mauve?"

"It's the colour for danger." Mara told the blonde as she watched the Doctor.

"What happened to red?" Rose asked with furrowed eyebrows.

"That's just humans. By everyone else's standards, red's camp." The Doctor explained to the girl. "Oh, the misunderstandings. All those red alerts, all that dancing. It's got a very basic flight computer. I've hacked in, slaved the Tardis. Where it goes, we go."

"And that's safe, is it?"

"Totally." The Doctor said when a loud bang echoed. Mara looked at the Doctor with a 'You sure about that?' Look. He sighed as he glanced at her. "Okay, reasonably. Should have said reasonably there. No, no, no, no! It's jumping time tracks, getting away from us."

"What exactly is this thing?" Rose questioned.

"No idea." The Doctor shrugged.

"Then why are we chasing it?" Rose asked with concern.

"It's mauve and dangerous, and about thirty seconds from the centre of London." The Doctor said before Mara spoke. Rose shared a look with the brunette on the other side of the doctor.

"No, actually, it's mostly 'cause he's mental!" She shouted toward Rose as she held the console somehow even tighter.

The whooshing of the Tardis echoed in the empty street as it materialized. "D'you know how long you can knock around space without happening to bump into Earth?" The Doctor questioned as the three stepped out, Mara and him hand in hand.

"Five days? Or is it just when we're out of milk?" Rose joked.

"All the species in all the universe, and it has to come out of a cow!" Mara lightly laughed at the Doctor's comment. "Must've come down somewhere quite close, within a mile. And it can't have been more than a few weeks ago, maybe a month."

"A month?" We were right behind it." Rose questioned.

"That's somehow just how time works. Also, it was going everywhere, jumping time tracks." Mara chuckled. "You'd have to be a very skilled driver to be right behind it." The Doctor smiled. "Unlike the Doctor here."

"Oi! We're bound to be a little bit out. Do you wanna drive?" The Doctor looked at her.

"Oh, if you insist," Mara smirked. He bumped her shoulder lightly making her smile. He chuckled at her reaction.

"Yeah. How much is a little?" Rose asked.

"A bit." The Doctor responded.

"Is that exactly a bit?"

"Ish."

"What's the plan, then? You gonna do a scan for alien tech or something?" Rose asked all excited.

"Rose, it hit the middle of London with a loud bang. I'm gonna ask." The Doctor explained to the blonde as the trio walked down the dark alleyway.

"He's also too boring for that," Mara remarked. The Doctor jokingly glared before pulling out the psychic paper, showing it to Rose.

"Dr. John Smith, Ministry of Asteroids." Rose read from it.

"It's psychic paper, it tells you-"

"Whatever you want it to tell me." Rose interrupted him making Mara smile. "Not very Spock, is it, just asking." The blonde shrugged before glancing at Mara.

"Door, music, people - what do you think?" The Doctor questioned as he listen through the door.

"I think you should do a scan for alien tech." Rose said. The Doctor got on his knee, sonicing the door to open it. "Gimme some Spock for once! Would it kill you?"

"Maybe." Mara joked as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"You sure about that T-shirt?" The Doctor asked, looking at Rose's T-shirt. It had the Union Jack practically filling up the whole T-shirt.

"Too early to say." Rose looked down at it. "I'm taking it out for a spin." There was a child's voice in the distance which grabbed Rose's attention. Mara continued to watch the Doctor as he unlocked the door.

"Come on, if you're coming!" He stood up. "It won't take a minute. Come on, Mara." The two Time-lord entered the door, leaving Rose Tyler outside.
