„Hope, of all ills that men endure,
The only cheap and universal cure."

The violent storm of the night before had passed when Serena awoke on the morning of the second of September. In fact, a few rays of sunlight had even returned to the girls' dormitory, where most of the residents were still asleep, bathing it through the scarlet curtains in a cosy faint glow the colour of a deep sunset. Hermione alone was already sitting on her bed, dressed and ready, poring over a thick roll of parchment.

"Hermione, I know you still have a lot of subjects," Serena yawned sleepily, turning once more in her cosy bed, "but school hasn't even started yet."

"Oh, it's not for school," the best of the year replied, smiling contentedly, and then stowed her notes away in her bag bulging with books, the seams of which were already stretching suspiciously.

Since Serena was not yet ready for secrecy in the early morning, she left it at that and did not inquire further. Instead, she finally straightened up slowly and sat on the edge of the bed. As her bare feet touched the cold floorboards, she wished she could tuck them back under her warm duvet with the hot water bottle still warm. "I hope the timetable for today isn't too full," she murmured, rummaging through her messy suitcase for a fresh school uniform. "If we've already got Astronomy tonight, I can't guarantee I'll be able to keep my eyes open."

Hermione just sighed, "Tell me about it. I'm sure I'll have an incredibly long day today, and I need to get to the library so badly."

"You could have easily deselected a few more subjects," Serena called out to her as she plodded her way to the bathroom and was about to disappear behind the door when Hermione launched into another reply. "But I couldn't have chosen at all, they're all so interesting!" she said in a whiny voice. "Besides, you never know what subjects you'll need for your final exams to get your dream job."

"Are you talking about exams already?" came the sleepy voice of Parvati from across the room. "At least wait till first period to do that."

Yawning, she stood up, stumbling over her own suitcase, which she had apparently forgotten she had put there the night before. The loud Indian curse she then uttered now woke Lavender as well, who grumbled and pulled the scarlet bedspread over her blonde curls. Before either of them could get the idea of pushing their way in, Serena hurriedly rushed into the bathroom.

Getting ready for the first day of school, Serena and Hermione descended to the common room a short time later to wait for the boys. As they did so, Hermione finally let her in on her supposed secret. "I have a plan," she explained, her eyes shining. "About the house elves."
