„A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship."
When Serena opened her eyes on Christmas Eve's morning, she could hardly believe her eyes. The snowfall must have started hours ago, coating the Hogwarts lands in a thick layer of snow, and more snowflakes were already making their way down from the sky into the sea of white.
The Gryffindor wondered if it had been the thick flakes that had woken her as she sleepily lifted her head from her down pillow. The other beds were already empty and apparently, as so often, she was the last to get up. Her sleep-clogged eyes turned to the window, against whose pane the flakes were being blown by the wind.
The snowfall was so densely that Serena could hardly see further than a few metres. The snow covered the grass, bushes and roofs with white powder and weighed down the branches of the trees with its accumulated weight. The sight had captivated her so much that at first she hadn't even noticed the presents at the end of her bed, which she immediately set about unwrapping.
This year she was particularly pleased with her haul. From Fred and George she had received some of her self-developed joke articles, the purpose of which she would probably have to find out for herself. Hermione had given her a book on Quidditch, Ron stink bombs and Harry a broom compass.
Her other friends didn't seem to have forgotten her either, because the magical hairdressing book, which allowed her to conjure up a pretty hairstyle with the help of spells, was given to her by Hailey and she found it particularly practical in view of the upcoming ball. She wondered if she had already chosen it before it was decided that she would go to the ball. Because there was probably a touch of self-interest in this gift.
She had received an exclusive copy of Exploding Snap from Nate and a book from Remus entitled: "Practical Defensive Magic and its use Against the Dark Arts."
The gift from her father was particularly large and turned out to be a photo album. Enclosed was instructions on how she could make pictures move and a note that read. "The idea came from your mother."
Serena had to smile when she opened the package of the mentioned and a Polaroid camera was revealed, with whose pictures she could fill the photo album. An enclosed card told her that her mother really wanted to see pictures of Hogwarts and the ball. What Serena wasn't sure of yet was whether she really wanted to be reminded of that evening. Not if she was going to spend it with Edmund Hall.
As it was probably almost time for lunch, Serena hurriedly began to get ready for the day and head downstairs to the common room. With the Yule Ball taking place, more students than usual seemed to have stayed over the holidays and were now crowded into the small tower. Grumbling, she pushed her way through the groups of her classmates, who were all busy with their presents, to her friends. "Morning!"
