"It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be."
After the frightening words from the hospital wing, Serena went straight to bed. In any case, they had not been allowed to visit Harry that same evening, which in retrospect had been fine with her, because she would not have wanted to talk to anyone else.
It must have been very early in the morning when she woke up, because it wasn't even really light yet. The sun was just beginning to rise behind a curtain of clouds. Serena could not even think of trying to fall asleep again, although she was usually the last one to get out of bed in the dormitory.
The events of the previous evening had lodged themselves stubbornly in Serena's mind and didn't seem to want to let go. But was she really surprised about it? She had already heard from many people how involved the Hall family was in the dark arts. So, in the end, had she simply closed her ears to it after the youngest of the family had saved her? After he had kissed her at the yule ball?
Now she knew for sure and she shouldn't really care. Because she hadn't really intended to go out with the boy a second time anyway. And yet she worried and couldn't help but feel an abundance of emotions flood into her. Was it anger?disappointment? But at whom? At herself?
No. It was entirely Edmund Hall's fault and that he was keeping her from the really important worries. The worry about the return of you-know-who.
With this dark thought in mind, the dark-haired girl finally slipped out of bed and, after brushing her teeth, already began to pack her suitcase for the upcoming trip home the next morning. Quietly, as her roommates were still asleep, Serena more or less neatly put away her clothes and other belongings that she would no longer need. Not even Hermione, who was usually always the first one on her feet, made a sound. The only background noise was Lavender's light snoring and the soft buzzing of a beetle outside the window.
The bright sun, which had broken free from the thick wall of clouds, was by now slamming through the high tower window when Serena finally finished and closed her heavy suitcase contentedly. She sighed and was about to draw the red opaque curtains when the buzzing beetle caught her eye. She recognised the insect at once, and not in the way that she knew what species it was. She knew exactly this beetle. The sudden realisation hit her like a blow.
Slowly and hypocritically, she turned around and moved away from the window. Cautiously, she began to nudge the sleeping Hermione, who merely grumbled "Mhhm" and didn't seem to take the slightest notice of Serena.
"Hermione, wake up," she whispered insistently, applying more pressure in her fingers as she began to shake her little harder. "I have something to show you."
