Dipper

Bill and Dipper left fairly early to retrieve Ford's soul. Or Dipper assumed it was early. It was hard to tell at the bottom of the ocean. Dipper was thankful that he could see in the dark, another perk of Bill's magic.

Bill's golden scales also let off a slight glow, which helped as well, since Dipper's night vision wasn't amazing, even with the siren's magic.

They made slow progress, as Dipper was still somewhat injured. Bill had healed him with his magic, but the cut was still there, Bill stating that he couldn't use enough magic right now to heal it completely, so Dipper was still sore.

It also didn't help that Bill could swim much faster than Dipper. Bill having to practically drag Dipper as they swam.

"Couldn't you use your magic to give me a tail or something? You already gave me gills." Dipper commented.

"I could, but unfortunately when I cast magic on someone else, it's not the same when I use it on myself. Who knows when the tail would wear off, if we're gonna confront Ford, you likely would have to stay in the water." Bill explained.

"Wouldn't it just wear off when I dried off, similar to how yours does?" Dipper asked. Bill shrugged.

"I'm not sure, I've never tried using much of my magic on other people. Especially humans. It's a lot less...accurate as it is when I use it on myself." Bill explained.

"So how do you know that the gills you gave me won't wear off soon?" Dipper asked.

"I don't know. I think because it was the first spell I cast on you, it will last longer. I don't know a lot about my magic, but I do know that humans build up a sort of resistance to it. That's why the healing I did wasn't as strong as I'd like. Your human body is rejecting my magic the more I cast it on you. So it takes a lot more effort every time I use my magic on you." Bill explained.

"That makes no sense." Dipper said. Bill shrugged.

"I don't make the rules. Just thank the kraken that my magic even works on you at all. Some people are immune." Bill commented.

"The kraken? Is that a real thing?" Dipper asked.

"Yeah, have you never heard of him? All powerful magical creature? Said to be the father of all magical monsters. At least the water based magic creatures anyway." Bill explained.

"Only thing I've ever heard about him is that someone released him." Dipper admitted. Bill nodded.

"He used to be chained down at the deepest part of the ocean. Some idiotic mer was tricked into cutting him free eons ago, or at least that's how humans see it anyway. He usually resides in the deeper parts of the ocean anyway, destroying ships that get too close to places they shouldn't be." Bill said ominously.

"Places they shouldn't be?" Dipper asked. Bill stopped swimming for a moment, looking Dipper in the eye.

"There's some magic that no one should use. Magic that human kingdoms have fought to get ahold of for years. The kraken makes sure no one can access it." Bill said.

"So the kraken isn't evil?" Dipper asked.

"I suppose there really isn't a good or evil. Really just depends on your views. Sure the kraken keeps humans from accessing magic that shouldn't exist, but he ruthlessly kills thousands of humans in the process, sparing no one who gets to close. Just like how humans hunt magical creatures down, they think they're defending their kind, but they never stop to think that maybe the creatures have families, or that the creatures are innocent. There is no good or evil. Just people trying to survive in this messed up world." Bill said, he began swimming again, leaving Dipper to his thoughts.
