"He's testing you~" Bill said in a sing-song voice as Dipper and him walked through town.
"What do you mean?" Dipper asked.
"He wants to see how you handle dealing with me, " Bill said, "Pretty sure he sent someone to follow you."
Dipper looked around but saw no one from his crew.
"How do you know?" Dipper asked. Bill raised both arms, as they were cuffed together, and pointed to his head.
"Fordsie isn't good at keeping his mind secure..." Bill said, "You on the other hand...you are surprisingly secure."
"How does that mind-reading work anyway? Can you read everything?" Dipper asked. Bill shook his head.
"I can only look at stuff that is...well it's hard to explain, basically it's the stuff that is at the top of your mind. If you are not very mentally strong then you I can see more." Bill explained.
"For instance, you are strong enough I can only really glance at what you are currently thinking. Essentially, I know what you about to say before you say it. Like for instance, you're about to ask me why I'm actually telling you this rather than just lying and saying I see everything." Bill said.
"Um...yeah, actually...why is that?" Dipper asked.
"Simple, Ford doesn't trust you. That's good enough for me." Bill said.
"Ford trusts me!" Dipper protested but as he said it he didn't believe it. Why would Ford trust him? They didn't know each other. And Dipper had spent the two years he was missing reading his journals and going through his things.
"So why are we going to the library anyway?" Bill asked as they walked into the library.
"I'm looking for information," Dipper said.
He quickly asked the librarian where the monsters and magical creatures section would be, she pointed him to the back, giving Bill a wary look.
"Magical Creatures huh? Any kind in particular?" Bill asked as they walked, "Also the librarian thinks I'm your slave."
Dipper chose to ignore the second part.
"I'm looking for information on Sirens," Dipper said, "Unless you are willing to answer my questions."
"Cool," Bill said, "And as far as answering your questions, well...if I knew anything about sirens, I would tell you. Unfortunately, I've been on my own since I was born. I don't know anything about my own species."
"Really?" Dipper asked. Bill nodded.
"Being part demon kind of makes the other sirens keep their distance. To be honest, I've never even seen another siren." Bill admitted.
"Well, I can tell you anything I learn," Dipper said. Bill nodded.
"If you cuff me to the ladder that slides along the bookshelf, I can look through the books," Bill said. Dipper looked at him warily.
"How do I know this isn't some trick?" Dipper asked.
"I want to learn about sirens too." Bill said, "Plus, how exactly would I escape with a ladder tied to my wrist?"
"True enough," Dipper said. He pulled out the key, unchaining Bill's right hand and locking the cuff to the ladder.
The two of them sifted through books for two hours before finding one very thick, old-looking book that seemed to have a large collection of creatures, magical and nonmagical.
"It looks like this might have what we need," Dipper said.
"Good, stuff it in your bag and let's go. Fordsie will get impatient if we aren't back soon." Bill said.
