"What do you suppose it looks like?" Jack asks you, staring off into the distance.
"What do I suppose what looks like?" you ask back, a cool breeze ruffling your (h/c) hair. There always seems to be a breeze in Jack's "penthouse."
"The sunset in Santa Fe," he replies, turning to look at you. A jolt of pain stabs your heart. He's always talking about leaving New York and everything in it to go west. He has never excluded you from that list. It pains you every time he talks like this.
You suppose you love him too much. Not a romantic kind of love, though. The love you feel for Jack is the kind you imagine you'd have for an older brother, if you had one that is.
Looking up at him, you fake a smile. "I'm sure it's beautiful."
Apparently, you didn't do a good enough job of faking it. He slides closer to you, concern in his eyes. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong," you lie, turning from him. You don't know why you're crying. He's talked like this hundreds of times before, and he's always stayed. And yet, this time feels more real than before, when it seemed as though Santa Fe was a far off dream.
"Don't ya like ta think about what it's gonna be like in Santa Fe?" Jack asks, truly worried about you.
"Oh sure," you sarcastically respond and whirl around to face him. The tears are falling fast now. "I just love to think about how it'll be when you go and leave Crutchie and me and the boys to fend for ourselves while you have a grand old time out in Santa Fe. I can hardly wait."
"Hey! (Y/n)!" he cries, holding you by the shoulders as you try to escape from the rooftop. "I thought... I thought ya knew I wanted you to come with me! I never wanted to leave you behind!"
"You... you really didn't?" you ask, shocked.
"Never!" he exclaims, pulling you into a hug. "We's a family. I could never leave you behind!"
"Thank you, Jack," you whisper and smile up at him. "Now, what do you think the sunset looks like in Santa Fe?"

FanfictionA collection of various "Newsies" imagines written around 2016-2017. Thought it would be fun to keep them all in one place as a kind of time capsule back into my thoughts and feelings during high school. Posted in no particular order.
