Judd and I hadn't really spoken in a about a week now. Only passing words or phrases. Everything felt - off.
I slid out of bed in the morning and unlocked the door, heading down the hall. I guessed that had been too much for me so early as I had to make a mad dash for the bathroom. Strange.
Elliott was already in there, brushing his teeth. I completely ignored him and kneeled beside the bathtub, emptying out all of my stomach contents and then some. I sobbed quietly as I leaned my head on my forearm, my stomach now cramping and a migraine settling in. I apologized to Elliott with a promise to clean the tub. He shushed me and helped me to my feet.
I leaned on him as he led me down the stairs to the couch. That's where I told him I was trying to go. He covered me with a warm blanket while asking me medical questions, trying his best to figure out why I threw up or if it was a one time thing. It was not. I tried to answer his questions but the nauseous feeling wouldn't go away. I turned my head away from Elliott and proceeded to throw up on myself, his blanket, and the couch.
Diane laid out a comfortable pajama set she hardly ever wore for me as she and Elliott headed upstairs to keep everyone busy. I quickly changed, not wanting to chance someone coming through the front door. I called for Diane after I'd thrown up again in a small trashcan. She hurried downstairs, several more footsteps behind hers. She knelt beside me and took my hand in hers. "What's going on?" I asked her, my voice wavering and my lip quivering slightly. "We don't know, honey. But we're gonna figure it out. Can I ask you some more questions?"
I'd agreed and by the time she asked her first one, the peanut gallery had gathered. Nick, Andrew, and Leah were standing at the bottom of the stairs. Elliott stood next to his wife. He and Diane exchanged looks as she readied her next question. "Is there a chance you could be pregnant?" I furrowed my brows and spent a minute or two running through the days. "What day is it?" "Saturday." I flipped through the calendar on my phone. "Yeah, a pretty good chance." I replied, setting my phone back down at my side.
Now everyone was quiet. No one could tell if it was a joke or not so nobody bothered to laugh. "I was supposed to start two days ago." Diane stood, shaking her head and mumbling under her breath. Elliott looked happier than I'd ever seen him. I'd say about that time is when Nick and Andrew began laughing quietly and conspiring about something. Nick turned to face the stairs, a mischievous grin in place of his usual pout. Well, that could've just been the way his fish lips looked. "Damn, Judd!" He called up the stairs. "I guess size really doesn't matter. You can knock your girlfriend up, no matter the size!"
Nothing but more silence. Then a lot of banging and thumping as Judd scrambled down the vents. It almost sounded like a stamped of elephants stomping through them.
