wolf set the picnic basket down on the soft earth. he watched as scarlet spread out the worn blanket, taking care to smooth out any wrinkles. she placed the jug of water they'd brought on one corner and the basket on the corner diagonal from it, keeping the blanket from blowing away. she reached out and he automatically put his hand into hers. she sank down onto the blanket, pulling wolf with her. scarlet began unpacking the basket, spreading their lunch around them. she handed wolf a sandwich, grabbing one for herself too.
after the food was gone, scarlet sat between wolf's legs, leaning against him, his arms wrapped around her. she sighed, content. she felt wolf gently pull on one of her curls framing her face, watching as it bounced back into place. he played with it a few times, then moved his attention to her braid, tracing his fingers over the pattern of the locks of hair with interest. "do you know how to braid?" scarlet asked him, guessing the answer. wolf shook his head no, his eyes not straying from her hair. "do you want me to teach you?" she asked, turning in his arms to face him. he nodded, the corners of his mouth turned up in a smile. he sat up straighter while scarlet sat all the way up, crossing her legs and sitting as close to him as she could. she pulled a large chunk of hair over her shoulder, passing the rest of it to the back. she separated it into three even pieces and showed him how to weave them together. she undid the braid and looked up at him. he smiled slightly, carefully dividing the hair into sections. the smile never faded as he focused intently, taking his time. when he finished, he cocked his head, displeased with how it turned out. he took the braid apart and started again, determined to make it neater this time. scarlet watched him, her love evident. and so they sat there, in their own little world, each of them with eyes only for the other.
