As the sun crept through the curtains, I opened my eyes.
My head felt heavy and my fingernails ached. I stood up and checked the time, it was 7:25 am.
I laid back down. This shouldn't surprise you because it was a Saturday I heard something sizzling in the kitchen.
Mum was probably cooking something. I wasn't in a hurry to go downstairs so, I stayed put. When it was 7:58 am, I stood up and walked to the bathroom.
I came out of my room and pushed the door firmly close. I walked downstairs and mum was the first thing that caught my eye.
"Good morning, ma'am" I greeted but, she didn't answer. She didn't even look at me.
"Good morning, mum." I greeted still
"I heard you the first time""Oh, I thought you didn't. Mum, look I'm sorry for flaking out on Jake. I..... I ..... didn't.......
"You hungry?" She said raising a jug
"Yeah, sure," I said and walked to the dining room.I sat down and mum set down the dish. It contained bowls of rice, stew, lobster, and lamb chops.
I took a huge spoon and started to serve myself some rice, stew, and lamb chops."Mum, this is good," I said
"Mhmm" she replied plucking the leg off the lobsters."Look, mummy, I'm so sorry. I......
"Let's not talk about this now. Please, Kenzie doesn't ruin the moment"Just then, the doorbell rang. I dropped my spoon and walked over to the door. I opened it and she walked in
"How do you do?" Stacy said
"I do fine," I said and hugged her
"Oh my God, Do I smell lamb chops?" She said and wiggled herself out of the embrace.
"Yeah," I said leading her to the dining room
"Hi, auntie""Hey, Stacy" Mum said hugging her.
"Oh my gosh, auntie you looked last week, what's up?"
"Nothing's up. I'm just tired"
"Ooh, I know" she clicked her finger like she remembered something "what you need is a makeover. Come on getting dressed, we're going to the spa."
Mum looked like she was about to argue but, she sighed instead and walked inside. Meanwhile, as Stacy sat to eat some lamb chops, I decided to visit Jake

"Em excuse me, I'm here to see my brother," I said to a nurse.
"Name please," she said looking into her book
"Jake Williams""Oh yes," she said directing me to the ward he was admitted.
The door creaked as I opened it. Tears escaped from my eyes and ran down my lips as stared at my 13-year-old brother lying on the bed.
He was looking so tiny and bony. His head was shaved clean. He look so terrible that I couldn't look anymore. I turned around and walked away.

"Doctor, what's wrong with my brother?" I asked the doctor.
"I'm sorry but, who is your brother?" He asked me.
"Jake Williams"
"Ahh. master Jake" he sighed and said "well I'm sorry to say that little Jake has leukemia"
"But, I thought it was just a tumor"
"We thought so too, till we had the lump
removed and found out he had blood cancer too"I found myself looking at the floor and then I looked up and asked,
"How long does he have? I mean is there a cure or anything?"
"I'm afraid not. Chemotherapy is yet to show some improvements and I think we won't know till then"
"Can I at least see him? Maybe talk to him" I asked already crying.
"I think he would have to be conscious. So, let's go see if he is"
As we walked in, Jake's eyelashes flickered and he opened his eyes
"Get out!" Was the first word that came out of his mouth. His little voice pierced through my ear
"Jake listen, let me explain"
"Get out!" He said, his voice growing louder
"Calm down, Jake," I said going closer to him.
"I hate you, get out". Just then, he flung something in the air and it hit me on the head.
I yelped as blood started to run down my face. I turned around and ran out. I kept running and running.
Jake hates me. My mum despised me. I understood why. I was a bad sister and a bad daughter. My eyes were hurting as the cold breeze blew grains of sand into them.
You're a bad girl, a voice kept saying in my head. I kept running, trying to run away from the voice.
Just then, I saw a headlight then, two, and wham! The car that knocked me down halted and a man came out trying to help me
"I'm fine," I said to him and continued running till I got home.I ran into my room and folded beneath my bedsheet. The bed had turned red with blood. I reached for the first aid box and started to tend to my head wound. The least I could do for my mum was looking fine.

I ran my hands through the posters on the walls. It has one simple message: ANNUAL SCHOOL DANCE.
I was thinking, that maybe Chase would take me. I had never gone to a school party before.
Something always happened anytime I wanted to. I missed my nursery graduation because my dress tore.
I missed my 5th-grade graduation 'cause, we traveled. I missed my first prom 'cause, my dad died.
Something was always up. I hoped nothing came up this time around.
"Hey there." I heard someone say behind me. I turned around and saw a boy with curly hair and hazel eyes.
"Hi, Kim," I said to him
"Mr. Zach asked me to give you this." He said handing him a piece of paper. I opened it up and smiled at the contents.
"Wow, that was your first smile of the day," Ge said and clapped.
"Thank you Mr. Kim Tsukatoshi. Well, I gained this smile for passing my maths test." I said and we both laughed.
"Em....... Kenzie, can I ask you something?" He said
"Yeah, sure"
"Will you be my date to the dance?"
It came as a shock. I was so surprised because I didn't see it coming.
I started looking at my palm then, I looked up and said;
"I'm sorry Kim, I can't," I said letting him down easy
"Why?"
"I already have a date"
"Oh." He said, smiled, and walked away.
I watched him go before walking away.
