"What the hell is that smell?" I said as I entered the kitchen. The smell was horrible and familiar. I pinched my nose close and my eyes turned red.

"Oh, Kenzie." Randy acknowledged and turned. He was holding a stick of St. Moritz on his lips. Oh, that was where the smell was coming from. Wait Randy smokes?

"What the heck are you doing?" I said and pulled the cigar out of his mouth.

"What?" He said trying to grab it back.
"No, you are not supposed to be smoking," I said and dipped the butt of the cigarette into a bowl of water.

"Why if I may ask?" He said, his arms akimbo.
"One, smoking in the kitchen could start a fire, and two, smoking at all is dangerous to your lungs," I said and tapped his chest.

"You're looking beautiful today." He said and pulled the string on my chartreuse-colored cardigan.

"Wrong. I look beautiful every day." I replied.
"Fact!" He screamed and we laughed. "So why'd you visit?"

"It's mum. She's having another episode." I answered not hesitating for a minute.

"Wow!" He exclaimed.

"What?"

"I never for once thought we'd be this close. I mean Kenzie Williams and Randy Malkoff. Best of friends."

"Yeah, never thought so too." I chuckled. Just then, an awkward silence fell, and boom! I and Randy started to kiss.

"Um excuse me." We heard a tiny voice say and we turned.

"Sorry to interrupt but, Randy there's a call for you." Cheyanne his little cousin said.

"Uhh thank you." He said and grabbed the phone from her. She stood at the door frame, looking at us. "You can go now." He said to her.

"Yeah, I forgot you were busy smooching."

"Get out." He yelled.

"Alright, captain smooch-a-lot." She replied and walked away.

"Your cousin is funny," I said, laughing.

"Shh," he said over the phone.

"Sorry." I apologized.

"Oh....yeah....yeah....sure I'll find someone. I mean....I...I have found someone...yes sir. Bye." He dropped the phone and gave me, smiling.

"You look happy. What's up?"

"I just found you a new job."

"What job?"

"I found you a job as a teacher....um a physics teacher to be precise at the comprehensive high college."

"Where is it located?" I asked worriedly.

"That's the problem. It's in Michigan."

"Michigan? Christ, that's like too far. I can't leave my mum and Jake and Salvy and....."

"For goodness sakes, Kenz, don't you sometimes feel suffocated in here? I mean you have to stop being worried. Also, you can bring Jake with you." He said and dipped his hands into the pockets of his teal-colored apron.

"I don't know," I argued still.

"Kenzie"

"Fine." I agreed before he could start another sermon.

******

"Kenzie what are you doing?" Mum asked when she saw me running down the stairs with a duffel bag.

"I'm trying to get to work." I answered."

"You guys going on a field trip or something?" Aunt Trudy asked.

"Nope, I got a new job in Michigan as a teacher," I said and maneuvered upstairs into Jake's room.

"And you are taking Jake along?" Mum asked.
"Yep," I answered without looking up.

"So you just decided to wake up one day and leave without telling me. You applied for a job and booked a flight without telling me. Do you hate me that much?" Mum screamed.

"I don't hate you mum okay? Randy helped me find the job like 3 days ago so, I was impromptu." I explained.

"Since when did you and Randy become friends?" She yelled, wheeling her chair close to me.

"Mum it's getting late. I have to go." I turned with my duffel bag in my right hand and Jake in my left.

"God, you are so much like your father. Stubborn." I heard mum say before she was out of earshot.
