"Kenzie pour the grated garlic into the ramekin." Chef Dennis ordered as I dipped the basting brush in the vegetable oil. I looked around the room of the restaurant I worked in and sighed.
The place was beautiful and wonderfully designed. Maria, my co-worker, poured herself some expresso from the expresso maker. She pulled off her apron and placed it behind the cafetière.
"You better hurry up girl, Dennis is really upset this fine morning." She advised.
"I know, I know. I'm just tired." I said adding some chives to the tuna.
"Not as tired as I am."
"You sure about that?"
"Kenzie, I've four kids and an aging St. Bernard. So, yes I'm sure."
"I think Dennis needs to calm down. I mean, come on we're not machines." I screamed loud enough for Dennis to hear.
"Shhh calm down girl. You want to get us all fired?"
"Know what? I don't even care anymore. How much does he even pay us?"
"What's got you all worked up?"
"I don't know. Life?" I said placing the tray in the oven.
"Well, life is a sick person." She said.
"Tyler butter the lobsters, Dominique mashed potatoes stat. Maria where the hell are the champagne flutes?"
Dennis barked, yelling orders across the kitchen.
"Alright, I hear you. I'm coming. Girl I've to go."
She said and picked up her apron. I watched her leave before sinking into a space close to the faucet.******
Mum wheeled her chair into the kitchen as I placed the colander of rice on a bowl. She had gotten better in the space of three months. She could now speak well and move her arms.
"Kenzie, what's up? You look horrible."
"That's 'cause I'm a horrible mum."
"Is it Dennis?"
"Yeah. Why does he always have to be so mean?"
"You know you don't have to work there. You can always work in my office."
"I told you I don't like sitting around."
"You make it sound like a bad thing."
"Mum you and I know it not but, I don't think I can take your workers calling me 'ma'am' every minute, and besides I should have enough savings by the time I graduate."
"Wow."
"What?"
"Wow."
"What?"
"I mean look who's talking like a big girl."
I smiled as I poured some powdered saffron into a pot of boiling meat.****
The garbage bag rustled as I dumped it into the open can. I dusted grits of rice out of my clothes and turned towards the door. Suddenly I heard rustling in the bushes. I almost jumped out of my skin before I saw her face.
"It's just me."
"Maria? What are you doing here?"
"I came here to ask if you could babysit my kids tomorrow night. I'm kinda going to be busy."
She said rubbing her palms together.
"Can't your husband do it?"
"I told you I don't like him being near the kids." She said and pulled out a stick of cigarette from her pocket.
"What the heck? Maria put that away."
"Why?" She asked with the stick still between her lips.
"I don't know, 'cause it's wrong? For goodness sakes Maria you've got four kids and this? This is highly irresponsible of you."
"You know what? You're right."
"Thank you."
"So you going to babysit them or what?"
"Nope."
"Thanks for nothing."
"Now get out of here." She smiled at me and walked away.
