"Okay class, settle down," I said, and almost immediately 32 eyeballs looked up from their desks and started staring at me.

"Class!" A boy in a spruce-colored cardigan chanted and the whole class stood and greeted.

"Hmm. I like that." I admired.

"Names, ages, and month of birth." The spruce boy chanted again.

"Aaron, 14 years old, November 17th." A fat boy in a polo said and sat down.

"Aisling Barry, 16 years old, April 24th." Another girl with a bun said and on and on they went till all sixteen students had told me their names.

"Okay, now that we know each other properly, we advance to today's lesson," I said and faced the whiteboard.

"Um..... ma'am."

"Yes, Aisling?"

"You didn't tell us your name."
"Oh....um my name is Kenzie. Kenzie Williams."

"Okay." She said and scribbled down my name.
"Okay class, today's lesson is vapor pressure. You see, when a liquid is heated, the molecules gain enough energy which enables them to escape from the liquid surface to form a vapor. According to the kinetic theory of....." I paused as my phone tweeted in my pocket. I excused myself and walked out of the classroom.

"Hello Stacy," I said, sounding unsure of myself.

"Yeah Kenzie?"

"What do you mean 'yeah Kenzie? You called me." I said, cooking the nape of my neck backward.

"Oh yeah.....um...I called to tell you that.....uh...I don't know how to say it."

"Stacy!" I yelled.

"Fine, your mum has gone crazy."

"What?"

"Yeah, she arrested Randy for brainwashing and some stuff of that sort."

"Brainwashing?"

"Yeah. She said he 'brainwashed' you into leaning home without her permission."

"And the dang police arrested him for that crap?" I asked, turning my lipstick in and out.

"For some reason, I know not."

"Jesus. Okay, Stacy tells mum I will be home soon."

"Okay bye." I had almost dropped the phone into my pocket when I heard her say "um... Kenzie."

"Yeah?" I said, placing it back on my ear.
"I'm sorry for everything that happened. I guess I was being a butt and....."

"It's okay Stacy....um....how is Sal?"

"He's fine."

"Okay bye," I said and wiped my forehead with the back of my hand.

I pushed the doorbell and when I got no answer, I turned the doorknob and the door opened. That was surprising, I mean mum never leaves the door open. I walked in and saw mum on her chair with a St. Moritz between her first and middle fingers. Did everyone I know smoke? Mum looked shaken.
I drew in a lungful of smoke and pointed to a corner in the dining room. I turned on my heels and walked to where she pointed. My mouth flew open as I saw my aunt's body lying in the fireplace. As usual, K.T was printed on her forehead. For a moment, I couldn't breathe or move.

"You should have stayed," Mum said and plucked a piece of tobacco from her teeth.
