"...... the common African toad Bufo regularis is typical of toads as a whole. Toads are most common in the wet season and are mainly nocturnal." The speaker boomed in my ear. I rested my head on the armrest of the sofa as I listened to a documentary on frogs and toads.

"A frog's body consists of a head and trunk only. There is no neck or tail. If there was a ta....." I stopped listening as I heard a rattling sound beneath the narrator's words. I pulled off my headphones and strained my ears. Then, I heard the doorbell ring.

"Who is it?" I said walking to the door. I opened the door and Kiara and Randy walked in.

"Hi, Kenz." Kiara greeted.

"What's up?"

"I'm good."

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

"I brought you some food." She said holding up a picnic basket.

"You didn't have to. We have enough."

"Oh, I did have to. You look so slim." She said raising my arms. "I'm so sorry for what happened."

"It's okay."

Almost immediately, Randy coughed and I turned.

"Oh Randy, didn't see you there."

"Sure you didn't."

"I didn't."

"I should eat more. I probably look so tiny."

I giggled and started to brush a little. Randy smirked and for some stupid reason I know not, I melted inside my clothes.

"Um... excuse me. I'll be in your kitchen if you need me." Kiara announced and walked away.

Randy walked toward me and held my hand warmly. I turned and faced him, looking into his eyes.

"Kenzie." He started. "You need to get out of here. I mean go out for lunch or something. Don't you feel I suffocated in here?"

"I do. It's just that I can't leave my mum alone. She can't do anything herself. She can't even complete a sentence."

"Maybe, you should leave her with Kiara."
"I don't know if I......"

"Kenzie you need to stop worrying. She'll be fine."

I sighed and nodded.

I pushed my face forward towards the mirror as I dropped the lip liner and applied some lip gloss on top of the light pink lipstick. I pulled my messy hair backward and started to wish Stacy was still here. After going through some hair-dos I decided on a French plait. I added the rubber band and let it slide to my back. Just then, I heard a groaning sound and I turned.

"Mum, what are you doing?" I said getting up from the chair.

"Leaving."

"Yes, mum I'm leaving." She only talked in monosyllables.

"Where?"

"I'm going out on a date. Well, not a date just something to clear my head."

"Who?"

"With Randy."

"Like?"

"No mum, I don't like him now."

"Lonely."

"Kiara is going to be here."

"Kiara?"

"Yes, mum."

"Goodbye." She said and smiled.

I smiled back and walked out the door with my silver sling back scraping the tiled floor.
