1.)
I looked at her with a level stare. My dream came back to me then. I saw my sister, coming out of the ocean and telling me things similar to what she was telling me now. So, I was a werewolf. I found it hard to believe, just like that, and my stomach tied itself in knots at the thought. Instead I just nodded and glanced at Sfin as he began rebandaging my shoulder and arm.
I looked back at the woman and nodded, "okay." She seemed pleased enough at my answer and I wondered how old she was. Maybe 28 or 30 or somewhere between.
Sfin finished and I slid off the table and onto the floor. I flexed my arm, testing it. It hurt but it wasn't to bad and I thought I would be fine. Lee looked at me, "still hungry?" She asked.
I nodded vigorously, "ravenous," I said and it may have been my imagination but it almost seemed she smiled.
I followed behind her, feeling bad for leaving Sfin behind but he started humming and it seemed okay. She led me back into the kitchen I had been in, where the people who had come in earlier were eating and talking. They didn't sound anything like the kids at school. They sounded like adults, the way they held themselves and the way they looked at each other as if sharing a silent conversation when I walked in. I swallowed thickly and stared back. I refused to act like the bug under the microscope.
"This is Amy, Dillan, Luke and Logan," Lee said gesturing to them all in turn. Amy was tall, taller than me, and had short red hair, held back in a tight ponytail. She had features that looked constantly angry, like she was mad at everyone and everything all the time. I could understand that.
Dillan was the tallest of them all, I would call him lanky. He had shoulder length cropped brown hair and dark brown eyes. His skin was tan and he seemed genuinely interested in me. Not mean. He had a curious face. Luke was tiny, probably only coming up to my shoulders, He had dusty blond hair, the same length as the others and he looked as if he percieved the world as one big joke. He had a sparkle in his eyes and a grin on his face. I thought perhaps I could like him.
And Logan. He was the strangest. He seemed guarded and open at the same time. Interested yet not caring, bored but occupied, smart and stupid, happy but sad. He was by far the strangest guy I had ever laid eyes on. He had brilliant blue eyes and longer brown hair than the others, kept in a poytail. He stood leaning against the counter, managing to look regal but relaxed. He spoke first, "Hi. You're Elmira."
I nodded, "Call me El please, Everyone does,"
"did, you mean," The girl stood up, offering me her hand. I noticed none of their eyes looked specifically cruel and all of the them wore the same leather clothes. While I was stuck with this ugly gown. that was barely tied. I struggled not to blush as I shook her hand.
"I guess," I said. Past tense. Everyone did call me El. What did that mean? Suddenly I wanted to cry but I shoved the urge away violently and focused on the girl. I could think about such things later when I was alone.
2.)
I ate with them and talked with them. They asked things about me and told me things about theirselves. It seemed they were all Hunters like Lee. And what did they hunt exactly? Well, they tried to explain it to me. The hunted anything that threatened the secret. The secret being the knowledge of things that I now was. Werewolves, vampires, demons, and such things. They also used all manner of weapons thinkable. Guns, swords, knives, shurikans, wips. It was like something out of a dream.
But I knew it wasn't a dream. For one thing I had never had a dream this lucid and two, the pain in my shoulder was way to prominent for this to be a dream.
"well, I'll show you to your room." Lee said standing up and looking at me then around the room like a mother looks at her kids ,"You guys have had a long day and you need your sleep. Tomorrow you have a free day, I'm putting Elmira with you guys," Their responses were a multitude of shrugs and grunts, though Logan didn't do anything at all. He just watched me closely.
I gave one last look at them before I turned to leave. Lee walked with authority and I practically had to jog to keep up with her, despite her shortness. She led me to one of many bland wood doors, she opened it and looked in. "I'm sorry I can't further explain Elmira, I truly understand what this is like for you and I'm sorry you've been pulled into all this." Her voice sounded geniune, and I was grateful for that. But then,
"But you are what you are now and if you so much as attempt to hurt one of those kids I will personally kill you. Meet everyone in the kitchen at eight. Sleep good," and with that she pushed me in and closed the door.
3.)
I went forward into the room after staring at the closed the door for five minutes, I looked around. The room was smallish with only a wardrobe in the corner and a bed against the wall. There was another door to the right of the bed that I presumed to be the bathroom. I'd never had my own bathroom before, I would have to check it out after the bed and wardrobe.
As I got closer I noticed a small bedside table that already had an alarm clock on it. It was very similar to my one at home and I got the hang of it quickly. I was surprised to see it was already set for 7:30 a.m. Strange, I thought, but no stranger than being told I was a werewolf.
I shuddered and moved to the wardrobe, throwing the doors open wide and peering. I noticed with interest that it already had clothes in it and upon closer inspection I reailized they were all my size. Even the underwear and bras. I wondered who had checked my sizes and gotten the clothes but after a moment I decided not to think about it. It didn't matter after all.
All the clothes were tight, black leather like the others which I was almost grateful for. I wouldn't have to worry about looking out of place now. So collecting what I needed I decided it was high time I visited the bathroom and took myself a shower.
The door opened inward and I glanced around. Small, clean, orderly, everything I could need exactly where you would expect it to be. Reminded me of a truck stop shower room. I set my clothes down and closed the door. There was an electric fan in the top right corner and shower was my favorite kind. A sliding door shower with shampoo and conditioner and bars of soap already on the shelves. Seeing these things reminded me of when we had learned personal hygeine vocabulary in my spanish class. The memory brought with it a pang of sadness and I wasn't quite sure why.
I turned the water on and undressed, then stepped in. I then proceeded to take one of the longest showers I had ever taken and found myself thinking deeply, as showers always help me do. I wondered what exactly all this was. I wondered where I was and how long I had been unconciouss and I wondered what day it was, if band camp was over yet.
That thought was what did it. My stomach twisted and I almost puked. I fell to my knees and it was all I coud do to hold myself together as my body was wracked with sobs. I had never been the crying type, I couldn't even remember the last time I had cried let alone cried like this. My body shook with sob after sob, my nose ran and blood streamed in small rivers from my shoulder, swirling down the drain. Finally I got enough control of myself to bathe, without thinking at all. My face was expressionless in the mirror in a way it only ever was when I was incredibly angry. I dressed without thought to it and turned off all the lights. I located a brush and ran it through a few times and then went to the bed and collapsed into it. I closed my eyes and slept the sleep of the dead.
