We were about an hour into the dance when he finally arrived. At first I saw Hoseok with a beautiful ravenette at his arm. Soyeon wore a black dress where the bottom half was see through. With her short black hair, she looked absolutely stunning and Hoseok was rocking his look with a simple white shirt and black blazer look. He looked effortlessly elegant.
Jungkook on the other hand wore a black shirt and black tie with matching greyish pants and blazer. His all-black look gave off a rebel vibe that I absolutely loved to see on him.
His head turned to the side and for a brief moment, we locked eyes. He was the first to pull away. I cleared my throat and took a quick look around to see if anyone had seen this but everyone at my table was focused on the stage.
The playing band that the school had hired had just announced that the first student performance would begin shortly. I looked at the entrance and Soyeon and Hoseok had already disappeared. A chair being pulled on my right made me turn around.
"What were you talking about with Jimin?" I lean in closer to Yoongi and whisper my question.
"We were just talking. I took your advice and befriended him. He's not so bad" Yoongi leaned back in his seat meaning the conversation was over. I ended up doing the same and soon after the lights were turned off to focus on the stage.
Taeyong, Hoseok, Namjoon and Soyeon arrived and greeted everyone before taking their place. A rather chaining beat started playing as their performance started. When it ended, the group was showered with applauses and whistles. Most of us had gotten up during the stage, way too hyped to sit down and enjoy the song.
After they ended, the DJ started playing a few classics that had everybody dancing and shaking their bodies. After about an hour on the dance floor, I ended up taking a quick pause to go sit down and get something to drink.
"So, how come you're alone tonight?" Miyeon asked me as I sat down next to her.
"I didn't know who to bring if I'm being honest"
"Isn't there anyone you like? The last girl you were into was Wheein and she graduated two years ago" Miyeon looked in my direction, but I didn't say anything. Truth is I had liked someone else in the meantime. His name was Xiumin but he was an exchange student and had gone back to China before I could confess to him.
"Well, I haven't really thought of liking someone else, I guess" I fiddle with my rings and take a sip of my drink.
"You don't usually have to think about those things. They come by themselves" Miyeon pouted and looked around. I stayed quiet, I wasn't sure what to say.
Eventually, the music died down and the DJ announced that two students would be performing a song. I asked Miyeon if she wanted to go closer to the stage to see better. When she agreed, we got up and made our way to the center of the room.
Jungkook sat down at a piano that had magically appeared and Yuqi stood in front of it. He started playing the notes to the song I had heard a million times by now. Just like always, my heart skipped a beat when I heard Yuqi's voice opening the song.
By the time the second chorus hit, I couldn't feel my body. It was as if I was trapped in the moment. My eyes were glued on Jungkook as his delicate way of playing the piano. Every time he opened his mouth to sing I would be amazed at how nostalgic and yearning he sounded.
The bridge was split between the two and they shared the last chorus. The piano softly died down until it was silent and everyone applauded. I stayed quiet at first, frozen like a statue until Miyeon nudged me to tell me how beautiful the performance was.
"Uh yeah, b-beautiful" I blinked a few times to pull myself out of my trance and clapped along with everyone else.
The director of the school thanked all the students that had participated in the event and asked for yet another round of applause for all of them before handing the mic back to the DJ. A soft song played from the speakers and as all of the students dispersed.
"You guys did really well, I'm impressed" I say when I get up to where Jungkook was.
"Thanks, I actually really enjoyed myself tonight" He nodded his head and smiled.
"Well that's what performing is all about, right?" I stuck my hand inside my pocket, I didn't know how to behave myself.
"I guess it is" Jungkook smiled and tilted his head. "How's your night so far"
"Pretty good, yeah. Normal, I guess" Just as I finished my phrase, the DJ lowered the volume of the song he was playing and spoke.
"If everyone could be bring their boyfriends, girlfriends, crushes and life partners to the dance floor. This song is for all of you beautiful people out there" He yelled as Prince's Purple rain started playing.
Everyone gathered around us on the dance floor and started slow dancing. I could see so many couples around me that I was suddenly very aware that Jungkook and I were standing in front of each other in the middle of a lovey-dovey dance floor. I think he understood the situation as well when he cleared his throat and excused himself.
"Uh, I should go get something to drink. My throat feels kind of sore" His hand kept scratching his neck and his eyes couldn't meet mine.
"Yeah, definitely. I'm going to do the same" I see him quirk his eyebrow but leave before he could say a word. This was way too awkward.
When I got to the table, I saw Soojin was sitting all by herself and asked her to dance. Judging by the smile on her face, it was the right call. I smiled as well as I lead her to the dance floor. Her hands wrap around my neck as mine wrap around her waist. Purple rain was one of my all-time favorite slows and I was glad they played it.
I looked around and saw Namjoon dancing with Jiu. Mark was holding Haechan close and Hoseok couldn't take his eyes off Soyeon. It was all very cute until my eyes landed on a ravenette that was staring at me.
Jungkook and I locked eyes and neither of us broke the eye contact. He ended up looking away, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. Something about locking eyes with someone across the room as you're both slow dancing with someone else, made me feel all kinds of things.
Eventually the song ended. I guided Soojin back to the table as we all sat down. Jaehyun sat down with us and started talking about something he overheard when he was in the men's room. I didn't really pay attention, like I said before, gossip wasn't my thing.
