As the school day came to a close, Lana wondered if Ophelia shared her interest in these Sirens. She knew that her sister also had a love for the ocean, but maybe Lana was just thinking foolishness. She stood outside the school, waiting for Ophelia to get out of her last class, Science. Her strict teacher never let class out on time. Then a loud voice was heard, and students emerged from the classroom. As usual, Ophelia was the first one out the door. She grinned when she saw her sister.

"Thank God, Lana. I was going to kill myself if Mr. Damien said one more word about photosynthesis," Ophelia groaned.

"It's alright, at least it's over," Lana said, and Ophelia gave her a grateful smile. "How about we go to Jamie's for some chips? Aunt Kelly's out till at least dinner tonight," Lana continued, and Ophelia nodded enthusiastically.

As the pair walked down the empty sidewalk, Lana pulled out her most prized possession, her black, fleece-lined leather jacket. A storm was approaching, and the town seemed to know, as everyone was bringing in their potted plants and flags inside. As they approached the old diner, Ophelia paused.

"Can we stop by the beach, just for a moment?" she asked.

"Yes, let's. I have something on my mind, too," Lana replied, secretly grateful. She was thinking the same thing. The girls always went to the beach to clear their minds. They especially liked it during winter, because the usual crowd wasn't there. They removed their shoes and put their feet in the icy waves. The chill of the cold water sent a wonderful tingling sensation through Lana's body, and all of the stress from the school day seemed to wash back along with the gentle tide. Moana's mind began to race with new thoughts, but this time not about homework, school, or friends. About the mysterious Sirens. What was it like, living out there in the vast open sea, with no borders to contain you? With no responsibilities, or other people to please? In a world that was entirely your own, with no expectations? But then, she thought about what the Sirens really were. No, she thought. Stop all this nonsense. Sirens are awful, bloodthirsty monsters. And they're not even real! Myths! Legends! You're acting like a toddler. She tried to tell herself these things, but somewhere deep inside her overactive brain, there was something, that was nagging her to learn more about these creatures. Maybe there was something more to them then the murderous creatures that they are portrayed as. She shook her head, in an attempt to rid herself of these thoughts.

"We should go," Ophelia said, who also looked as if she had just shook off her own thoughts. "The afternoon football crowd ought to be coming into Jaime's soon."

"You're right. Let's go," Lana said, and they were on their way.
