Ophelia watched as her aunt and uncle's old station wagon pulled out of the driveway and out onto the deserted street. As soon as they disappeared, Ophelia heard footsteps thudding up the stairs. She smiled and turned around as Lana disappeared around the corner upstairs. She slowly walked up and when she entered their bedroom the book was already open and Moana was laying on the bed with her eyes closed. Ophelia sat down looked at the book closer, filled with an irresistible urge to decipher the words it contained.
"Ophelia?" Lana called from above her. Ophelia was silent, and her sister sat up suddenly. "Let's dig in."
After turning page after page, Ophelia and Lana still made no progress, and Lana was beginning to become discouraged. She was more interested in the book's magical properties, while Ophelia was captivated by the strange text.
"Lana, I'm telling you! The key to finding all of this out is in the words!" Ophelia pleaded.
"But how on Earth are we going to figure out what they mean?" Lana said. Ophelia paused.
"I don't know yet. But I'm going to find out." she said, and Lana knew she meant it. Ophelia turned and stroked the rough pages gently. Suddenly overcome with a coughing fit, she went to stand up and get a glass of water. She placed her hand on the book to help herself up, then suddenly, Ophelia's hand fell through the book! Ophelia yelped, and when she pulled her hand out, it was was cold and wet! Lana gaped at her sister, her jaw to the floor. Ophelia sat shaking, staring at her hand.
"O!" Lana shouted, and ran to hug her sister. Ophelia sat, confused. "Don't you see?! If I jump in there, we could be transported into another world! We could find out about the writing!"
Ophelia let this sink in, and Lana stood up and was literally about to jump into the book. Ophelia grabbed her arm.
"Woah, woah, woah! Easy! Not so fast," she shouted and Lana have her a confused look.
"What? Why not?" Lana asked.
"You... I... You can't! I don't know what's under there. It could be dangerous! You may go in and never come back? How will you get back? You can't just jump back in the book!" Ophelia said, close to tears.
"Calm down! Stop! Don't get so stressed. I don't see what the problem is." Lana said, getting flustered as well.
"What I'm asking you is, how are you getting back out from the book? Once you jump in? It's not like there will be a duplicate book in... Wherever it leads. It may not even be another world. It may just be water underneath the pages," she pleaded. Lana seemed to consider this. She bent down and stuck her hand in the page, and when it disappeared, she couldn't help but smile. The cool ocean water felt wonderful on her sweaty hand. Ophelia did the same, and underwater, she reached for Lana's hand. Lana looked surprised at first, but then smiled and their fingers intertwined.
"I know we'll figure this out," Lana said.
"Yes," agreed Ophelia.
"Together."
