Ophelia rubbed the page between her fingers, as Moana finished reading the first of many chapters in The Siren's Legacy. Moana sighed as she finished the last paragraph.
"Wow," she said, and shook her head.
"Do you know what this means?" Ophelia said, a hint of concern in her voice.
"What?" Moana said, confused.
"This means that there is another world! Well, maybe it's in our world, but... You get the point! There are Sirens. This really is happening. This is real life!" Ophelia exclaimed, and Moana couldn't tell if her loud voice was showing excitement, anger, wonder or fear.
"But that prophecy it talked about... Sent by a book, it said," Moana pointed out.
"Sent by a book... Sisters..." Moana scanned over the prophecy page. "It can't be."
"You don't think..." Ophelia's eyes widened.
"Are we... The Saviors?" she said. Suddenly, The Siren's Legacy began to glow, pulse and shake. Moana grabbed Ophelia's hand as wind once again whipped through the room.
Thud, thud, thud.
"Oh, no..." Ophelia said and Moana quickly slammed the book closed. Everything stopped, just in time too, because Lawrence burst into the room. His wispy brown hair was a mess and his collared shirt still had drool marks on it. Gross.
"What in God's name is going on up here?!" he screeched and slammed the door behind him. Moana looked at Ophelia, and Ophelia gave her a death stare. Moana couldn't come up with a good excuse to save her life. Ophelia looked at Lawrence with the most innocent expression she could muster up.
"Uncle! Did we wake you?" she said, wide-eyed. Lawrence's expression didn't soften.
"What do you think?! I was right in the middle of-" Ophelia cut him short. She wasn't in the mood for hearing about his extremely weird dreams.
"I am so sorry, Uncle. I was just trying to..." She had to think fast. "Show Moana the new gymnastics moves I learned in phys. ed. and I fell over," she said, rubbing her leg for effect. "I'm all right, though, really." She gave a weak smile.
Lawrence eyed the corner of the book that was sticking out from behind Moana. "Then what," he said, "is that?"
Moana scooted it further behind her. She gulped. "Phys. ed. textbook." She said. And Moana smiled. For once, Moana had come to Ophelia's rescue. Finally, Lawrence seemed to cool down.
"I, ah, guess... I guess I overreacted. Sorry, girls," he said. And with that, he walked down back downstairs. As he shut the door behind him, Ophelia opened the book again, waiting for the glowing process to continue. But when the book opened, all was normal. Ophelia looked at Moana.
"Well, that was weird," Moana said, and started to walk to her wardrobe to put her pajamas on.
"No!" Ophelia shouted, and Moana stopped, confused. "No, no, no!"
"What? What's wrong?" Moana said.
"We... We interrupted it! It couldn't finish... It was... It was trying to do something!" Ophelia said, seething with frustration.
"What if it did finish, though?" Moana said, cocking her head. This didn't occur to Ophelia. She flipped through the pages of the book and noticed a small, yellowing sheet of paper wedged between the last two pages of the book. Ophelia quickly snatched it out and unfolded it.
Ophelia Day and Moana Sun,
Finally, the time has come. You know what you are destined to do. I know both of you have your strengths and your weaknesses, and your skills will benefit each other and the whole Bay. You must come to Jade Bay immediately. The time the prophecy warned of has arrived and no Siren here expected it, including myself. Our situation seems almost hopeless at this point. We need you, Saviors. Help us.
I am proud of you both.Ophelia and Moana read the note 3 times over, looking for some trace of a signature. All they could find was the stationary that the note was written on had a seashell and wave design around the border.
"Immediately? How do we get there?" Ophelia asked.
"Through the book, obviously!" Moana said, and gave Ophelia an "I-told-you-so" look. Ophelia hesitated.
"Do we trust it?" Ophelia asked.
"Is there another way?" countered Moana. Ophelia smoothed out her hair and Moana stood up.
"I hope you're right about this," Ophelia said, looking nervous. Moana smiled and took her hand.
"We can do this," Moana said, and Ophelia nodded.
"We've got a Bay to save," Ophelia said bravely, squeezed Moana's hand, and together, they jumped into The Siren's Legacy.
