Wilbur has trouble calling Phil dad

He’s gonna do it. He’s gonna do it. No chickening out, no backing down, he’s doing it. Here, now, its all led to this. He’s gonna do it.

Wilbur takes a deep breath, another. They’re pulling up to the school, they’re almost at the drop off point. The PE teacher is lazily waving to them. Its now or never. The car is stopping, Techno is opening the door.

Now or never.

He’s gonna do it.

He’s gonna do it.

Techno is out.

Wilbur takes another deep breath. He feels shaky, his palms are sweaty. Here it comes. His chance, he’s not throwing away his shot. He gets out of the car, turns back to get his bag.

“Bye--” His throat closes up, his breath hitches. “Bye…have a good day.”

“Bye Will, have a good day!” Phil chirps.

Wilbur closes the door and Phil drives away.

He didn’t do it.

Mission failed. Mission incredibly, miserably failed. He is a coward.

Wilbur groans and buries his face in his hands.

“Soot!” The gym teacher barks, “get inside!”

Wilbur sighs, glaring from behind his hands. He shoulders his bag and tromps into the cafeteria. Techno gives him a questioning look as he dumps himself into the seat beside him. “You forget something.”

Wilbur lays his head on the table. “No.”

A beat of silence.

“Do you…not feel good…?”

“I’m fine.” Wilbur mutters, his voice muffled by the table.

“...okay,” Techno says, apparently having reached his quota for Emotional Outreach.

Wilbur could talk to him about it, but Techno’s advice would be terrible. He’d just tell Wilbur to do it and quit making it out to be something huge. The problem, of course, is that it is something huge.

Its probably best that Wilbur did chicken out this time. Looking back at it that was the worst way he could have done it. Just blurting it out and shutting the door is terrible. This needs something more.

But not something too much, just in case.

Wilbur’s belly twists at the thought of ‘just in case’.

No, no, ‘just in case’ is just his anxiety talking.

Tommy does it all the time and Phil is fine with it. He encourages it, even. He’s never pressured Wilbur or Techno, but he definitely melts when Tommy says it. Wilbur’s been around longer than Tommy, Phil has already adopted him, ergo, he’d probably be overjoyed. He’ll probably cry or some shit when Wilbur finally takes the plunge. It’ll be fine.
