Phil holds him closer. “Do you love me?” he asks in a whisper.

“No,” Tommy answers.

Phil hums and presses their foreheads together. His crimson eyes gleam with a strange light. “Would you ever leave me?”

“If I had the chance,” Tommy says.

“You won’t,” Phil says.

“I know.”

Phil presses at his jaw, and Tommy tilts his chin up, exposing his throat. Fangs sink into his throat, and the venom sinks into his mind. He floats and hears Phil swallow. Once, twice. He hums, pleased, and Tommy is pleased too.

And Phil bites deeper, pumps more venom into his veins and Tommy barely has time to register that this is wrong. This isn’t the way it usually goes. Then the venom sweeps over him. He isn’t just floating now, he’s flying. Euphoric, delirious, terrified, because he knows that Phil is killing him.

He drinks deep, great gulps of rich, sweet blood. Tommy watches from beyond his body, beyond time, beyond feeling. Phil grins, predatory, satisfied, hungry, and drains him dry.

Phil holds him closer. “Do you love me?” he asks in a whisper.

“No,” Tommy answers. “I hate you, I’ve always hated you, I always will.”

And Phil looks shocked, hurt.

But he looks even more so when Tommy grabs the shard of wood from where it was hidden in his waistband. Its a small thing, barely more than a splinter. But its long. Long enough to plunge all the way into Phil’s un-beating heart and show him what fear is like.

Phil holds him closer. “Do you love me?” he asks in a whisper.

“Yes,” Tommy whispers in reply, even though he should hate him. Even though part of him does hate him, more of him loves Phil. He is being kind, and Tommy is starved for kindness. He would eat a thousand poisoned meals to keep from starving, even if it kills him.

Phil holds him tight and whispers gentle promises into his ear. How he will never be scared again, how he will never be sad, never be alone.

“I’ll fix it all,” the Angel of Death promises. “I swear.”

Phil holds him closer. “Do you love me?” he asks in a whisper.

“Yes,” Tommy whispers in reply, even though he should hate him. Even though part of him does hate him, more of him loves Phil.

And Phil laughs. A dark, malicious sound, “Wilbur bet he could get you to love him first, but I knew he was going about it the wrong way. You’re a compassionate little thing, aren’t you sweetheart? A few hints and you fell head over heels. Its okay,” he pulls Tommy forward to rest his chin on Tommy’s head, “I’ll love you too, in my own way.”

Phil holds him closer. “Do you love me?” he asks in a whisper.

“I could,” Tommy says, “one day, maybe.”

He doesn’t say: “That day will never come. You won’t even see the end of this day.”
