Mildew and rust.
That's what most Hydra bases always smelled like. They also always seemed to be the same when it came to the structure. The buildings were old abandoned factories or warehouses, most of the time made of concrete or brick walls. They would be hidden in a forest, on top of a mountain, or underground somewhere.
One whole year of looking for mildew rusty hidden Hydra bases.
How many did we take down so far?
I lost count.
The soft clinks of the chains was the only thing I heard for a moment. The stiffness in my arms were from them being cuffed over my head on a hook. It didn't help either that I was suspended about a foot or so from the floor. And just like all the other Hydra bases, this abandoned factory smelled like mildew and rust. The walls were made of brick with a few boarded up windows. The heavy footsteps of the man in charged slowly walked towards me. I raised my head up slightly to look at him.
"So, you're the Luna. I've heard rumors about you. They said that you were powerful, fearless, and very good at killing. How wrong those rumors were," he scoffed.
My head weakly fell back. The taste of blood was in the very back of my throat due to having a cut inside my cheek from one of the Hydra agents punching me. An agent punched me hard in the gut, making head jolt forward. Another put an electrical rod against my back, making me cry out. My toes curled from the pain. He pulled the rod away and I gasped for air.
"Perhaps, you would be more useful as a bargaining chip," the leader said. He gestured one of the Hydra agents to turn on a monitor that seemed to be calling someone.
I tilted my head to the side. "Sorry, your name was..."
"Commander Nathaniel Smyth."
"And is Smyth spelt like 'Smith' or is like 'Smite' as in 'I'll smite you'?" I questioned breathlessly. Smyth clicked his teeth, grabbed the rod, and electrocuted me again. "You know, you're putting that thing in all the wrong places."
The monitor changed for me to see Natasha, Tony, and Clint in the conference room at the Avengers' tower. "Avengers," Smyth announced smugly. "I believe it was unwise for you to send one of your agents here alone. You should've known better than to do something so reckless."
I dipped my head back, looking over to my right. On the control panel was my gear. I listened carefully to hear the soft beeps. It was one beep every two seconds. The beeps were so subtle that I was the only one capable of hearing it. Not even the agent guarding my utility belt could hear the beeps. I needed to listen to it beep three times per second for me to know. As I listened, I felt the rod hit my side, causing me to grit my teeth. My hands balled up into fists as my body stiffened. They removed the rod and my body relaxed.
"That's not necessary," Natasha said calmly as she tried negotiating with Smyth. "I'm sure we can come to an arrangement."
Beep, beep, beep.
My head dipped back as I heard the sound, zoning out from my friends' conversation with Smyth. I waited to make sure that I wasn't hearing things.
Beep, beep, beep.
I smirked at the sound, but kept my head back as I started to sing, "Livin' easy. Lovin' free. Season ticket on a one way ride. Askin' nothin'. Leave me be. Takin' everythin' in my stride."
The agents looked at me like was crazy, even Smyth stopped mid sentence to confirm that I was singing. Natasha and Clint tried to hide their confusion as well, but they weren't doing a great job at it. Tony had his hand over his mouth, trying to remain serious.
