"Hey, Mom," I couldn't stop the sad smile spreading over my lips as my mother's voice picked up the phone.

After last night's dinner with Alina and Kear, I felt a little homesick and had asked Liam if it was safe for me to call my mother just to check in with her the next morning.  He had consented and so passed me the house phone to dial my mother's cell number by heart.  She answered on the second ring with her formal business tone, "Jennie Cordova, how may I help you?  Oh, sweetie!," my mother squealed once recognizing my voice, "how is Camp going?"

I couldn't help but chuckle as I wandered around my room and sat at the foot of my bed.  I'm not sure who Ronan had ordered to come and clean up my room after he had Marked me, but it was now sanitized and free of bloody sheets anywhere, so I was now able to sleep in my own room once again instead of Mason's now.  "It's going great," I lied through my teeth, and bit back a sigh, "although there are a few angry campers."  Otherwise known as the very angry Alphas.

"Oh, well, that's to be expected of some kids," my mother easily waved off my comment.  "Now, tell me, are there any cute boys there?"

I laughed.  "Mom!  I'm not here for romance, remember?"  Although there are two boys I'm technically tied up with.

My mother blew a raspberry through the mic with her lips.  "Oh, honey, that still won't stop any girl at a co-ed Summer Camp.  Who knows?  You could have a Summer fling!"

I laughed once again.  Ah, my dear eccentric mother.  "Yeah, I could, but that doesn't mean I will."

"Oh, boo, you killjoy," my mother pouted, thus spurring yet another laugh from me.  "So why the sudden call, honey?  And how did you even get the counselors to let you use the phone?"

"Uhm," I nibbled on my lower lip and rushed to think of something plausible before deciding to just go with the truth, "I just, missed you, is all," I finally mumbled, and lowered my gaze to the floor since I currently sat on my bed in my room, legs crossed beneath me as I fiddled with my fingers in the bedsheets.

"Oh, honey," my mom cooed, and I couldn't stop the tears pricking the corners of my eyes at her tone.  My mom was the only family I had left since both my parents had been an only child like I was, and both sets of my grandparents had passed away long before I was born.  I had no one else and I had never felt so alone before now.  Kind of made me wonder how Messiah felt all these years now.  I could feel my Wolf whimpering from within my mind at my emotional pain even though she had no idea how to comfort me in this regard.

I swallowed roughly and continued, "Uhm, how's it going at home?  You do anything fun without me yet?" I huffed a laugh at my attempt at a joke as my mother sighed.

"Sadly, no.  It's actually been too quiet without you around, and it's only been a week.  I'm missing you, too, baby girl," my mom murmured, causing me to sniffle as I held back my tears just as there was a knock on my door and I looked up to see Liam standing in my open doorway, one hand still raised mid-knock.

I immediately cleared my throat and sat up straight on my bed as I tossed my feet over the mattress edge.  "Uhm, mom, I have to go now.  Our counselors are having us, uh, take a morning hike to, uh, wake up the nerves.  Yeah," I mumbled a stupid unconvincing lie on the spot as Liam smacked his forehead in disappointment.  I only flipped him the bird in response.

"Well," my mother paused for a moment before continuing, "if you say so, honey.  Call me if you ever need me, sweetie.  I'm always here for you," my mother finally bid me goodbye as I hung up the phone and heaved a massive sigh before directing a harsh glare over at the Messenger of Love.
