"Ally.." I hear Shawn say through my daze. I open my eyes and remember I must've fallen asleep.
I sit up, "what time is it?" I ask groggily.
"Like midnight," he says. "My mom should be home soon. Lets get you to bed," he says and ushers me up.
I stand up and have to blink a lot just to get my eyes to work.
"Shawn carry me," I say knowing he's capable and probably willing.
He sighs, "okay," he says and I'm lifted off my feet.
I have my eyes closed almost falling asleep again. I feel myself being laid down in the guest bed, where I'm sleeping.
Shawn sits on the bed after getting a text. I lay with my head in the soft pillow, awake but having my eyes shut.
"My mom said she's going on call tonight. That means she won't be at home at all. I'm driving us to school," he says.
He lays his hand on the blankets above my hands, "get some sleep. We wake up at 7," he says and walks out.
I quickly get comfortable and fall asleep once again.
I'm at the hospital, the same machines beeping. My mom breathing right next to my chair, in her bed. Ron is in the chair across from me.
I look around and don't see anyone. I look back to my mom and see Ron standing over her, holding a large knife.
I can't talk. I want to yell for help, tell him to stop. But I cant.
I watch as he lowers the knife into my moms heart. The last thing I see are her cold, blue eyes.
I wake up screaming, a single tear running down my cheek. Next thing, Shawn is in my room and the light flips on.
My eyes sting from the brightness, but I don't care. He sits next to me, asking what's wrong. I wipe my tears and realize it was just a dream.
"Is it your mom?" He asks in a sleepy voice.
I nod and fall back onto my pillows.
I rest my hand on my forehead and squint my eyes as he stands up to leave.
"You okay?" He asks, shutting off the light and standing in the doorway.
"Can you stay?" I ask quietly.
He nods as if knowing it would come.
He walks around to the other side of the bed and crawls in. I turn with my back to him, him facing me. Spooning, you might say.
I shut my eyes and focus on his breathing. We used to have sleepovers, I was too young to remember every detail. I remember Shawn and Ally show time.
We'd sing and dance to just our parents, but I remember that faintly.
I try not to worry about my mom, think about what actually is happening. I just focus on how she's going to be okay. Everything's okay when I'm with Shawn, my mom is going to be okay.
______
I hear the awful sound of the Marimba alarm on the table next to me. I jump a little when I feel a body next to me, then remember what happened. Oh yeah, my mom.
I sit up and rub my eyes, I shake Shawn.
He sits up as well, "school already?" He asks in the same voice I heard just a few hours ago.
I stand up and feel Shawn's flannel at my thighs. "Yep, so let's go," I say and walk to Shawn's room.
I grab my bag and head to the bathroom. I put on my black jeans, pink (the brand) tee shirt, and white vans. I brush out my hair and let it fall to its usual length, just at my ribs.
