Third Person Perspective
~Flashback~
2011
"Why are we even together!" Y/N screamed as she threw a glass across the room, "I mean what, you won't tell me anything! For all I know you are screwing the Agent Willows!"
"Agent Willows? Seriously!" Grant Ward screamed back, "How little do you think of me?"
"I don't know! You won't tell me anything, you won't move in with me, nothing!" cried Y/N, "I mean we've been together for 5 years, do you even love me?"
There was silence in the room, she waited for a response. The hesitation was too long, she knew what she suspected to be true.
"So this was all a lie then huh?" she chuckled through the tears, "Our life together was a lie."
Silence.
"Can you say something?" Y/N sobbed, "Anything please."
"I think you should go." Ward said sternly.
She looked at him with her eyes filled with the tears of pain. She laughed at the response, after all the time they spent together this was how it was going to end. Ending with her heart shattered. She gave up in defeat, walking out of her boyfriend's apartment where he lived alone.
~Flashback over~
It had been two years since she last saw the man she thought she would end up with, and the wounds reopened so easily. They stared at each other for a long time more, the silence saying everything that needed to be said. The tension between them was high, mixed with anger, guilt and such. Y/N glanced at him once more, letting out a soft laugh. Before she let him give a response she walked past him, subtly shoving him to the side. She continued to walk, attempting to not let the tears swell in her eyes. Today was supposed to be a new beginning, something to look forward to and it was already going to shit. Y/N continued her journey in search of Coulson, to talk about what the hell he was trying to do. She knew he'd read her personnel file, there's no way he didn't know about her and Ward. As she finally approached Coulson, he could see the distress on her face and he automatically knew what happened.
"You weren't supposed to see him yet." Coulson sighed.
"That's funny because I think I just saw him." She said blatantly, "What's your game here Coulson?"
"No game." He replied straight, "It's just strategy. You and Ward are some of the best in SHIELD, I would hope you guys could work out your differences."
Y/N remained there silent for a minute. She was an agent after all, working with people she didn't like was in her job description. But what he did to her was something no one ever did before, how could she get through it alive?
She knew she had no choice, it was this or going back to her depression spiral."I heard Agent May is here." Y/N said changing the topic of conversation, "Where can I find her?"
"In the cockpit." Coulson replied, "Not sure if she's in the talking mood though."
"We'll see about that." Snarked Y/N.
Y/N walked through the plane once more making her way to the cockpit. Finally one last stop on the wretched tour she was having. As she approached she could see Melinda May, The Calvary, sitting there by herself. She knew she probably enjoyed the silence, but she couldn't miss catching up.
"Agent May." Coughed Y/N, "It's been awhile."
"Indeed it has." May replied with little emotion, "I heard he's got you both on the plane."
"Hopefully I will never have to speak with him." Y/N replied.
"Yeah good luck with that." May continued sarcastically, "Small plane."
Before they could finish their conversation, Coulson walked in abruptly. He handed Y/N what seemed to be a tablet, showing what seemed to be a man of super strength. He saved a woman from a building as if it was nothing, like she was as heavy as a feather.
"Mission?" She asked.
"Mission." Coulson replied with excitement.
He directed her to the main area of the plane where the rest of the team was now. They were a team alright, Fitzsimmons, Ward, May, Coulson and her. Not once did she look at Ward though, she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of her desperation. She just kept her eyes on the board, observing what it meant as Coulson spoke.
"We've received word that a member of the rising tide is boasting about the masked man." Coulson spoke.
"The rising tide?" Y/N asked, "Why would they have interest in this?"
"Don't know." Coulson sighed, "But they are spreading propaganda, which means we need to find the person and question them. Fitz can you transmit where they are accessing this from?"
"Should be able to." Croaked out Fitz.
"Alright, May you be with me my look out while we go get this scoundrel." Coulson continued, "Ward and Y/L/N, you're on interrogation."
Neither wanted to complain, they just nodded in Coulson's directions keeping the silence they had since they had arrived.
"The sexual tension is killing me." Fitz whispered to Simmons. Or at least what he thought was whisper. But yet everyone on the team heard what he had just said.
"Fitz!" Simmons said alarmingly, punching his arm, "Sorry about that."
That's when Ward finally broke his silence, he gave up first and she was victorious.
"C'mon let's go set up the interrogation room." Ward said quietly.
"Yeah." Y/N whispered, also embarrassed by what Fitz had just said.
They walked side by side as if nothing ever happened. As if they never happened, the five years they spent together they pretended like it didn't exist. They couldn't and wouldn't let it get in the way of the job. In their own ways they both needed it. Besides, Y/N had bigger fish to fry, being on the same plane as her ex was already a lot, her dad being there too made it a whole lot worse.
