All day the next day while I was working in the strawberry fields, my mind kept wandering. To spin the bottle, to Travis, and to my conversation with Aphrodite.
After about an hour, Miranda came over to me. "Katie, are you okay?" I looked up at her. "Yeah, of course I'm okay." She pursed her lips and looked at me for a second before grabbing my hand. "What are you doing?" I asked. "You are taking a break."
She walked me all the way to my garden, not dropping my hand the entire time. "Miranda, what is this about? I need to be working." She sat down on the bench, pulling me down with her. "You're not doing anyone any good the way you've been working. You keep dropping strawberries on the ground. What is up?"
For a second I considered telling her what I'd been thinking about, but I decided against it. "Sorry, Mir, I guess I'm just tired." She looked at me for a full 5 seconds before speaking. "Katie, I know you, I'm your sister. There's something wrong, and please don't try to lie. I'll know."
I bit my lip and looked away. "I'm waiting, Katie." "Um, Aphrodite has visited me a couple of times. And she keeps telling me I'm in love with Travis." She nodded.
I took a deep breath. "And, um, I think she might be right." She looked at me, not reacting. "I think I'm in love with Travis."
Miranda didn't do anything for a few seconds. "Mir, your scaring me." She smiled, slowly, and then busted out laughing. Oh my gods, did she think I was joking?
I must have looked afraid, because she put her hand on my shoulder. "Congratulations, Kit Kat." she said. "You are officially the last to know."
"What?" "I've been telling you that you're in love with him the entire time we've been at camp, Katie." I looked at my feet. "Do you think he knows?" Miranda laughed. "Katie, I know you love him, but that is the most naïve boy I've ever met. I'm sure he doesn't know."
I sighed. "I don't know what to do, Miranda." She patted my back. "I don't know what to tell you, sweetie. But I promise it'll work out."
