"I can't believe we broke twenty-seven cones," Jaden laughs as we clock out at the end of our shift.
I join him in the laughter, "she really wasn't kidding, was she?" I leave out the fact that I only broke seven out of the twenty-seven.
"We probably set a new record," he jokes.
"I wouldn't be surprised," I shake my head with a smile.
I look up to see Chase leaning against his car, taking in the scene and watching me intently.
I turn back to Jaden, "see you tomorrow?"
He nods, "see you tomorrow."
We part ways, I walk towards Chase as Jaden continues down the boardwalk.
Chase moves off of the car and closes the distance between us, wrapping me in a hug, "I told you you'd be okay."
I sigh happily, "yeah, you did."
He pulls away and looks in the direction Jaden went, "so, who was that?" There wasn't any jealousy in his tone, only curiosity.
"That was Jaden, the other trainee. We worked on the ice cream station together."
"Oh," his tone stays neutral, "okay."
I search his face in hopes of figuring out what he's thinking, but it's impossible. His face a clean slate, too clean. "What's wrong?"
He shakes his head as if trying to clear it, "uh, nothing."
"You can tell me anything, ya know," I do my best to reassure him.
He just waves his hand through the air, "just fans. It's no big deal, really. Don't worry about it."
I raise an eyebrow, "I don't understand... did you meet some on the beach or?" I leave the question open ended in hopes that he'll fill in what is really on his mind.
"Don't worry about it," he gives me an unconvincing smile before squeezing my hand, "let's head home."
There is something fishy about the way he's acting.
