"So, Sofía, what did you want to talk to me and Miss Hardbroom about?" said Ada with her kind voice.
"Well... I don't want to hide who I truly am. Even if it means you won't accept me in the school. But I don't like lying about myself, and I think you ought to know the truth"
"About what? And, unless you cheated in the exam, I don't believe there can be a reason not to have you in the school. You broke our school record, you are the best pupil we've seen in a while" Ada seemed confused
I breathed deeply and ley it go: "Even if I'm not from a witching family?"
"What?!" exclaimed Hecate in shock. Her mouth stood right open, processing theinformation. She started looking disappointed, but all of a sudden that look turned to anger. "You lied to m...us. You tricked us. You don't deser...""Hecate, that is not the way to handle this subject." interrupted Ada. "But I have to say I'm also in shock. How come you are not from a witching family? Are you sure they didn't just hide it from you? And either way, how did you find out and came to this schoo... oh." she suddenly stopped aa she realized something. "Esmeralda Hallow."
"Precisely. But don't blame her, please. I could see her through the veil that you have for non-magicals, so she didn't know I wasn't one of yours. And I'm sure my parents didn't hide it from me, becuase..." my voice broke. I couldn't... I didn't want to say those words outloud again, it would make things become more real.
"What happened darling?" asked Ada. I breathed heavily, and tried to answer.
"When I told them... that I wanted to apply here... in a witching school..." tears started filling my eyes, but I wasn't letting any of them, run through my cheeks. Not in front of people. They could see that I was heartbroken, but they'd never see me cry. Not that easily. "They said they didn't want to see me again. I was kicked of my house. I still have to search my things, but that's basically it."
"So you don't have a place to go?"
"For now, I'm staying at the Hallow's, but they said it's only for the time being. By the end of the year I should find somewhere else. And they don't even know that I don't come from a witching family."
They both stood in silence for a while. Hecate wouldn't even look directly at me. That hurt. It always hurt when teachers I liked took their distance. Even not having known them for long. Finally, Ada broke the silence.
"Well, we can't deny you a place here after everything you've been through. Besides, it's clear you have the gift."
"But Ada..."
"I know what you are going to say, Miss Hardbroom, and I understand you point of view, but I'm not changing my mind. She has nowhere to go. And she has so much potential, she can't stay without education."
"About that... if I may say something..." I started adding.
"Yes, dear?"
"Ummm, I might have gotten a bit further into my studies than I was supposed to, I was really interested. And I didn't want to get behind with all the things I'll have to do because I want to take extra lessons. I need to learn how to teleport to go back to my house and fetch my things. And Esme said Hec... Miss Hardbroom was the best for that." I said, smiling warmly, but shyly at her, to see her reaction. Her eyes widened a bit.
"I..."
"She'll be happy to." answered Ada for her. "But you don't need to learn how to teleport to fetch your things, we can do that for you."
"I know, it's not just that." I laughed a bit. This was going to be funny. "I wan't to assist my old school at the same time. I promise I'll keep the secret. It's just... I miss my teachers so much. And my friends."
