Sofía's POV

My time at Cackle's with Hecate couldn't have been better. I truly expected something different. That she would be distant and do her thing. But in the end, she was a great companion for the holidays. Did this mean I had just completely enjoyed my holidays? That would be a first I wouldn't forget.

My year was having sports class that day in the yard. Esme and I had had some time to catch up at the beginning of the day and we were freezing outside now, waiting for our turn to show Dimity our progress. Honestly, I hadn't even thought about lessons in those two weeks, but as I was slaying all subjects, I trusted I could manage. Still, I was kinda nervous. I comforted Nyxstar in my arms, petting her gently. Esme also had her familiar, Twilight, accommodated in her arms. Our other three best friends were standing next to us. Emily Springdust was as nervous as always, barely scraping a pass grade, she had to make a good impression. Jessica Sunburst seemed pretty confident, because sports was her best subject. As Dimity sent our other friend, Theresa, to the pitch, we managed to showed our thumbs up, to show support.

"I hope she has gotten over being so reckless with her flying." Em said. "I mean, she isn't bad, she is certainly better than me, but some of the moves she wants to do require a lot more practice."

"She said she had been practicing over the holidays, right?" Esme asked, looking at my direction.

"Yes. She was quite proud of what she achieved. I really hope she manages to make that dive she was trying last time."

"She told you she is going for the dive?! Is she crazy? The only reason she didn't break a bone last time was because you slid that protection potion in her coffee!" Jessica protested.

"I know, but she does know that. I guess the training with the instructor went well? I don't think he would let her do it if she couldn't."

"I know, but she might be doing this on her own. Let's pray for the best and be prepared for the worst. We can try cast a spell if she starts falling." proposed Esme.

"Of course. And I'm sure Dimity will be ready for the same."

"Let's hope she is." prayed Em, shaking her head, usually more nervous than us before these events.

We saw how, as Tess was approaching the starting line, the teacher came closer to give her some advise. I could almost read in Dim's lips, a warning not to try out the dive again. Tess only smiled and reassured her. I hoped for the best that she followed the advise, and if she didn't, that she was sure of what she was doing.

"Hover!" she ordered the broom, and the wood did exactly what she had told it to. She sat side-saddle, what I thought was complete bullshit as it was way more dangerous that way than the Harry Potter way. But it was how it was done in that school and I just had to get used to that.

Tessa flew up from the ground. She flew fast and elegant through the soaring sky. I could actually see a lot of changes in her flying. Before, her posture made her a bit unbalanced to the left and her grip on the broom didn't used to be strong enough. Now, she had gained balance and her grip was a bit more stiff, as she elevated herself through the air, until we could barely see what she was doing. Oh no.

Dimity anticipated what was going on, at the same time I did.

"Theresa Rosethorn, don't you dare try that dive, do you hear me?!" She yelled through the megaphone. Tess, didn't seem to care, or hear it at least, because, instead of calmly coming to ground, she did just what we all feared. She pointed her broom to the ground, and started quickly descending into the ground. Esme and I looked at each other, worried sick. "THERESA, STOP, BEFORE YOU GET HURT!" Dim yelled again, but she wasn't slowing down. The problem with trying to stop her on our own, was that, this time, she was coming much faster and from way higher than last time, so if we tried to suddenly stop her broom, her grip wouldn't hold her and she would still end up hitting the ground.
