When a heart beats, it makes a sound. A single pump, the swift swoosh of blood flowing through veins that bounce against their barriers to create a steady flow. One can hear it; in your chest, in your head and, in extreme moments of delusion, in your stomach. That single beat echoes off the bones, that small sound inflicts a domino effect that leads to life and that final breath before eternal darkness.

Who knew something so insignificant to an everyday conversation could have so much importance in everyday life?

Blush pinks, intertwined with ivory, mixed with the gold-orange tones of the sunrise. On the horizon, a small portion of the above was a light, bright yellow tinge in the sky where the sun was in the midst of rising from behind the taller mountains in the near distance. Sharp blades of grass held morning dew as the sun began to make its appearance in the early morning hours, shining beneath the colours in the sky above. The breeze came cold and uninvited, mocking the pretty morning view.

Walking out the front door of the red brick house in which she lived, Gabriella Castellanos led her two younger siblings to the car, both on the verge of falling asleep as they stumbled down the driveway.

"Come on sleepy heads," she urged, "I can't be late for my first day," she held back a laugh as her sister dropped her school bag and nearly tripped if it weren't Gabby's hand grasping the back of the younger girl's shirt.

Taking both her siblings' bags in her hands, she placed them in the front seat, along with her own belongings, before opening the back door for the kids to sleepily climb in, making sure her brother closed the door properly as she clambered into the driver's seat with a fond smile. Pulling her seatbelt on, she watched her brother and sister do their own, hearing the satisfying click of reassurance from both of their seatbelts.

"Mrs Hancock will be picking you up from school when she gets her kids, you'll be there for the night. She's going to help out until I can organise a permanent schedule of nannies, okay?" Gabriella spoke quietly over the soft buzz of the radio, smiling at her half-asleep siblings.

"Okay, Ella," her little brother, Maximilan, replied for the pair. Her little sister, Aubrianna, nodded softly as her eyes closed.

Gabriella Castellanos was walking towards her new resident while tying back her hair, the fake smile she'd practised for years on the cheer team on full display as she tried to not seem out of breath. Her sister cried her eyes out as she tried to leave for work and a guilt-filled Gabby stayed with her for way longer than necessary to ensure she was happy, causing her to miss out on introducing herself to fellow interns in the locker room.
